 Neotel to raise USD1 bln of funds for network expansion (South Africa)

Second national operator of South Africa is intending to raise USD1 billion of funds, mainly through debt, to finance its network expansion. Tata Communications of India owns 56% of Neotel which is in talks with various financial institutions that includes original investors Nedbank Capital, Investec Bank and the Development Bank of South Africa.

 India to hold a global auction for 3G spectrum (India)

The Indian telecoms minister has annouced that India will hold a global auction for high-speed 3G mobile services and have five operators initially.

According to the reports, India has 60 MHz of 3G spectrum available which will in future allow both GSM and CDMA 3G services.

This has led to a rise in shares of some telecom firms in a weak market, with Tata Communications adding 2.3 percent to 460.90 rupees and state-run Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd rising 5 percent to 109.20 rupees.
