 Movistar to roll out 3.5G network commercially in 8 cities on 20 November (Mexico)

Telefonica Moviles Mexico (Movistar) reportedly has instigated its  3.5G network in eight cities. The service is supposed to be available commercially on 20 November. Mexico city, is just one city which is not covered under this network as it awaits the allocation of additional spectrum.  The allocation of the spectrum is not expected until 2009. Movistar claims 19.2% of the market at June 2008 and is trailing behind its rival Telcel  which held 71.9% in the same period, according to a recent data.

 Tigo plans 3G expansion (Bolivia)

Telcel, brand name Tigo, Bolivia, plans a 3G expansion to a ‘group of important cities in the country’. The cities to be covered haven.t been decided yet, though the operator is in the final stages of the expansion plan.

   

 TeleNav-Telcel to offer mobile phone GPS navigation (USA, Mexico)

TeleNav proclaimed that it partners with Telcel (Largest Wireless Carrier in Latin America ) to offer Mobile Phone GPS Navigation. Telcel customers in select cities now have access to turn-by-turn, GPS-enabled driving directions directly from their BlackBerry(R) 8800 and BlackBerry(R) Curve(TM) 8310 smartphones. HP Jin, president, CEO and co-founder of TeleNav, said that GPS navigation is a service that people around the world can use in their every day lives. With this launch with Telcel, we continue to build upon our vision of bringing award-winning GPS mobile phone navigation to customers around the globe.

Customers of Telcel can avail this service in any vehicle or while walking, and voice directions are available in Spanish or English. While en route, users receive real-time guidance, including street names, and will automatically be re-routed if a turn is missed. Through TeleNav GPS Navigator customers can have access to business listings as a result they can look up addresses and get directions directly from their phone. Updation of Maps and business listings is done automatically with no addidtional charge.

 Mobile phones to replace hard cash in Mexico for small payements (Mexico)

Tech savvy teenagers of Mexicans will soon be able to use their mobile phones for making small payements such as restaurant meals and taxi rides. Mobile operators like Telefonica SA and Iusacell are teaming up with banks such as  Citigroup and BBVA to instigate the service, targeting technology savvy teenagers and anticipated to introduce the service soon.

Roberto Rodriguez, in charge of the service, said Cell phone users will be able to have their bank link their savings account to their telephone so they can make payments to participating stores, restaurants and taxis by sending a text message.

America Movil’s Telcel has yet to sign up with bank though it accounts for more than two-thirds of Mexico’s mobile pones.

In a country like Japan, using mobile phones as a medium to purchase items such as train tickets to purchase items is quite common but it is yet pace up in United States.

Mexico’s mobile industry is growing at a yearly rate of around 22%, reaching an estimated 60% penetration by September 2007. Mexico market is driven by a booming GSM market. Three major mobile operators: América Móvil’s Telcel and Telefónica’s Movistar offer GSM services, while Grupo Iusacell (recently merged with Unefón) uses CDMA technology. A fourth operator, Nextel de México, operates a mobile trunking system using the iDEN mobile communications standard. Despite increased competition since 2000, Telcel still dominates market share. Between 2003 and 2007, Mexican mobile operators have been upgrading their networks to offer high-capacity and high-speed data services, such as EDGE, 1xRTT and 1x EV-DO.

Highlights of 2Q ‘08 Mexico Mobile Forecast include:

*  Total subscribers in Mexico will increase from our projected 79.2 million in 2008 to a forecasted 98.5 million in 2010. The wireless penetration level of the country will continue rising and we expect it to reach 91.5% in 2010.

* Telcel will continue to be the largest operator in the country. We expect it to serve 66.6 million out of 98.5 million subscribers in Mexico in 2010. We are also forecasting that Telcel will enjoy the highest EBITDA margin of 55.0% in 2010.

* However, Telcel’s market share (by subscribers) is expected to decline from 70.3% in 2008 to 67.6% in 2010 as its competitors - Movistar Mexico and Nextel - continue gaining market shares.

* In 2010, the average ARPU in Mexico will be US$ 17.96 per month, or the highest ARPU in our seven-country Latin America coverage list. While the largest operator, Telcel, will register an ARPU level of US$ 16.71, we are forecasting that Nextel will receive a much higher ARPU of $65.38 per month in 2010.

 America Movil’s 2Q net profit mounts 25% (Mexico)

America Movil a Mexican wireless carrier said that its second-quarter net profit rose 25% to $1.75 billion on the year amid continued robust subscriber growth. America Movil’s total sales increased 14% from the second quarter of 2007 to $8.34 billion.

$1.56 billion is the expected net profit by the market, on revenue of $8.53billion,  according to the median forecast of nine analysts. Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization, or Ebitda, a measure of cash flow, increased 14% to$3.45 billion, while the company’s Ebitda margin was 41%.

The company added 6.1 million mobile clients in the quarter, bringing its total wireless subscriber base to 165.3 million at the end of June.

Of the net additions, 1.3 million were in Mexico, where the company’s Telcel unit finished the quarter with 52.9 million subscribers. In Brazil, America Movil added 1.9 million subscribers to finish the quarter with 33.1 million.

 3G embraced by Mexico’, Telcel thus creating ground for iPhone (Mexico)

Mexican mobile operator Telcel, a subsidiary of América Móvil, is upgrading its nascent 3G network in the country in time for its launch of the new 3G iPhone later this week. According to Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN), Telcel’s 3G network equipment vendor, the operator will rollout HSPA in several more Mexican cities based on the vendor’s Flexi BTS technology. NSN said the upgraded network would offer speeds of up to 2Mb/s during peak times as well as expanded voice capacity.

Telcel, Mexico’s largest mobile operator, only launched its 3G network in the first-quarter of this year, making it the first GSM operator in the country to do so. According to the latest Wireless Intelligence data, Telcel has an estimated 223,295 WCDMA connections and 37,215 HSPA connections (Q2:08 estimates). Telcel has announced three iPhone 3G plans with 24 month contracts that start at US$44 for a package that includes 200 minutes, 100 text messages and 100MB of data.

   

 

 Telmex and Telcel under probe after Telefonica complaints (Mexico)

Telmex and Telcel are at the centre of four investigations in Mexico to see if they are abusing their dominant positions in the market, reports La Jornada. The Grupo de Telecomunicaciones Mexicanas (GTM), which belongs to Spanish telecoms giant Telefonica, has complained Telmex and Telcel are abusing their position in various markets such as in local fixed telephony.

   

 13 interested in network expansion projects

Telegeography writes…13 companies have acquired the bidding rules for an auction to expand telecoms infrastructure in several Venezuelan states, reports BNamericas. The auction, held by telecoms regulator Conatel, is for contracts to deploy and maintain network infrastructure covering states including Zulia, Táchira, Mérida and Trujillo as well as other areas in the north, south and east of the country, covering a population of around 10.3 million people. The companies are Omnivisión, Telcel, CVG Telecomunicaciones, Impsat, Net Uno, IFX Networks Venezuela, Comsat, Entel Venezuela, Digitel, Procesamiento Electrónico de Datos, Global Crossing, Cable Éxito and Cablexpress TV. Companies have until 14 January to present observations and ask for further explanation on the bidding conditions.
