 O2 Ireland ARPU drops due to “extra value” for customers

Telefonica O2 Ireland reported a drop of 3.4 % to €234 million in service revenue for the three months to the end of September compared with the same period last year. For this quarter, ARPU showed a decline to €43.70 compared with €47 for the same three-month period in 2007. The operator adds 26,000 new customers and its subscriber base reaches to 1.73 million. Customer numbers are up 5 per cent year-on-year, the company said.

During the three-month period, a total of 609 million text messages were sent, representing a 55 per cent rise in text usage year on year, up from 393 million in the third quarter of 2007. ARPU for the postpay customers drops from €84.90 (2007) to €72.20. Paul Whelan, chief financial officer, Telefónica O2 Ireland, said ARPU had fallen due to “extra value” being offered to customers. The telecoms sector faced the same economic pressures as other sectors and predicted this Christmas would “a lot tougher than previous years, he added. The mobile phone penetration have reached 120%, Whelan said that the “phenomenal growth” in mobile phone penetration was coming to an end.

 Telefonica O2 chooses Huawei Technologies for 3G expansion and 2G modernization (Czech Republic)

Telefonica O2, Czech Republic, chooses Huawei Technologies for the expansion of 3G network and modernization of 2G. The operator at present provides it’s 3G network to it’s subscribers Prague and Brno.
So the subscribers in this area will have a high speed access to broadband internet, up to 3.6 Mbps at the beginning of 2009.
The operator plans a further expansion to 20 to 30 towns in the Czech Republic by the end of 2009. By end of 2010 the modernisation of 2G will provide speeds of 150-200 Kbps in its entire GSM network.

   

 Telefonica O2 plans 3G expansion (Czech Republic)

Telefonica O2, Czech Republic has planned to expand its 3G coverage to another 20 to 30 towns in the country. The current status of the operator is that it provides 3G coverage in Prague and Brno.

The first stage is scheduled for Q1′09, in which the coverage will extend across the Ostrava and Pilsen areas.

Telefonica also plans to provide 3G coverage to over 70 percent of the Czech population during the following two to three years.

Currently, the 3G network supports data transfer speeds of up to 3.6 Mbps, which is expected to reach 7.2 Mbps within two years.

   

 Telefonica O2 Q2′08 revenues up by 0.6% (Czech Republic)

Telefonica O2, Czech Republic has announced its Q2′08 revenues of CZK 15.8 billion, up by 0.6% from a year earlier. Mobile revenues grew 3% to CZK8.4 billion. OIBDA improved 6.5 percent to CZK 7.6 billion, giving a margin of 48.1 percent, while net profit rose 30.4 percent to CZK 3.4 billion, helped by gains on property sales. Capex fell 16.7 percent from a year ago to CZK 1.6 billion. The number of mobile customers increased by 6 percent year-on-year to 5.2 million at 30 June, of which 2.369 million were contract subscribers. The operator lost 36,000 prepaid subscribers during Q2, while gaining 63,000 contract subscribers. Mobile ARPU fell to CZK 523 from CZK 529 a year earlier, while revenue from data services increased 6.8 percent to CZK 505 million. O2 added 7,000 data users during the quarter for a total 212,000 at the end of June.
Despite a more challenging operating environment, the company expects to meet its earlier full-year guidance for revenues up 2-4 percent and OIBDA flat to 2 percent higher. Capex is expected to be around CZK 9 billion in 2008.

   

 Telefónica O2 profit up 10% in H1 (Prague)

According to the estimates of Czeh and foreign analytical firms available to CTK , Telefornica O2 raised net profit by 10 percent in the first half of the year. Less than 1 percent growth in the revenue. Income from activities of the mobile division rose by 4 percent but the income from fixed lines fell further by around 6 to percent as analysed by economists.

The total number of mobile services users increased by 6 percent to 5.18 million, while the number of fixed lines fell by 11 percent, that is around 105,000 lines.Telefonica’s Slovak mobile subsidiary, which launched operation in spring last year, has acquired 450,000 clients according to estimates.

Telefonica O2 will announce its results soon. Its majority owner is Spanish group Telefonica which holds around 70 percent of its shares.

 Nokia Siemens Networks wins Germany Network Contracts

Nokia Siemen Networks has grabbed the three-year contract with Telefonica O2 Germany to enhance the capability of it’s 2G and 3G networks by upgrading some 200 base stations. The company revealed that it has also won a separate “modernization project” with O2.

Along with upgrading base station, NSN will also upgrade the 3G network with HSDPA software functionality to cover all Germany. EDGE software will be upgraded by Nokia Siemen Network in order to bring high-speed data capability to the GSM network.

For maximized network performance and maintainence services NSN will provide the NetAct network management and service management.Under the separate service contract, Nokia Siemens Networks Services Deutschland will provide O2 in Germany with on demand system repair and maintenance services at all operator’s locations.

“We are very pleased to extend our long-term relationship with this agreement and by doing so, to strengthen O2’s competitive position in the market,” said Thomas Riedel, Customer Business Team Head for Telefonica Europe.
