 RomTelecom to launch mobile data service by year end (Romania)

RomTelecom, Romanian wireless licensee, hopes to launch the first mobile service by year end. The operator won a 450MHz mobile data licence earlier this month though the award was challenged by cellular operators Vodafone, Orange, RCS&RDS and Zapp/Telemobil.
   

 Court postpones mobile licence ruling (Romania)

Court has decided to delay its decision on the recent award of a mobile licence to fixed line operator RomTelecom. Although the Govt went ahead with the award but the legal challenge to the auction which had been launched by cellular operators Orange, Vodafone, RCS&RDS and Zapp/Telemobil. Argument from these firms is that the licence fee for the new permit is well below what they paid for their own cellular licences. RomTelecom is hailing the court’s decision to delay a ruling as a victory.

 Orange Romania launches fixed telephony service (Romania)

Orange Romania has launched a bundled telephony/broadband service targeting business and residential customers. The so-called Home & Office Packs provide fixed line telephony and broadband internet access via HSDPA and include a SIM card and an HDSPA terminal. The terminal enables users to simultaneously use voice and data services, via Wi-Fi and through a regular network cable, for one or more computers. Home & Office Pack plans cost 12 EUR, 24 EUR or 36 EUR, depending on the number of minutes and amount of Internet traffic included with the service. Customers who already own one or more Orange mobile service plans and purchase a Home & Office Pack will receive free calls from their fixed number to their mobile numbers and from the mobile numbers to the fixed Orange number. Orange Romania is the third mobile operator to launch a landline service in Romania following Telemobil (end-2005) and Vodafone Romania (June 2007 for individuals and September for corporate clients). Also, Orange announced the extension of its UMTS network and the upgrade to HSDPA, offering up to 7.2 Mbps download speed. The areas in Bucharest where the Orange mobile internet may reach the said speed include Unirii Square, Magheru Blvd – Universitate, Victoria Square, Pipera and Baneasa.

   

 Zapp to Roll Out 3G Network in Romania

Fauzhee.Smilejogja writes…After having paid before due date the first installment worth $10.5 million of the total $35 million a 3G license is worth, Zapp committed to building a 3G network that would cover most of Romania by the end of 2007.

According to Piermario Di Pietro, CEO of Telemobil (Zapp) : “The licence award marked the beginning of our 3G business in Romania. Being the first mobile operator
in Romania to be launched mobile broadband services, having a great network quality and riding on our competitive edge in technical and service innovations we are fully committed to constructing the next generation network�

Over the next period of time, Zapp will invest in the development of network infrastructure and multi-media content, and in the future will provide 3G services including video, mobile broadband as well as news content such as news updates and entertainment.

The mobile operator, aiming to deliver the best integrated wireless communication services in Romania by using advanced CDMA technology, will offer all the services mentioned before at very affordable prices.

“We look forward to providing our local customers with the best quality 3G services and expect to launch towards the end of the year. The 3G service Zapp is to offer, will be the kind of broadband mobile services which we know customers have a huge appetite for. We have a very clear and detailed vision of how our 3G service will look like and we move full speed ahead towards making it available to our customers as soon as possible.� added Telemobil CEO, Piermario Di Pietro.
