 Marcatel plans to participate in spectrum auction (Mexico)

The Mexican telecom operator Marcatel plans take part in country’s spectrum auction as it anticipates expansion of serives to broadband and 3G. Cofetel, the Mexican regulator, plans to auction 3G spectrum in the 1.9GHz and 1.7GHz-2.1GHz bands, alongside WiMAX spectrum in the 3.4GHz-3.7GHz bands next year. Marcatel’s president Gustava de la Garza noted, ‘We are ready to participate. We are waiting to see the bidding conditions and how many carriers will be allowed to participate, and then we will determine our offer’, also calling on Cofetel to consider implementing restrictions on additional spectrum that would be available to incumbent Telmex.

   

 Telmex looses 7,800 clients as Mexicans prefer cable operators providing phone services (Mexico)

According to the data released by the national cable association Canitec, Telmex has lost over 7,800 users who have preferred the services of other cable or telephone operators. Telefonos de Mexico adds 750 new telephone customers. The services of cable operators which also offers phone services is preferred by around 2,000 ported clients.

 Telmex announces restructuring (Mexico)

Telefonos de Mexico (Telmex) announced that it is restructuring its organisation in the country. The company will set up five divisions to conduct the work that was previously undertaken by ten divisions, to increase operational efficiency. A large number of executives will be transferred to Telmex International, if they express interest in joining the new company. Telmex also states that so far around 750 people have left the company, mainly through early retirement. The company’s announcement follows a report in El Universal that stated that it would reduce investment to USD 550 million in 2008 from USD 1.28 billion in 2007, following the government’s refusal to allow it to offer pay TV services for another two years. The article stated that up to 4,000 jobs above department head level would go.

   
 

 Telmex in talks with TeliaSonera over Spain (Spain)

Mexican operator America Movil is in talks with TeliaSonera about entering Spain, reports El Economista, citing sources close to the operator owned by Telmex. Daniel Hajj, chairman of America Movil has met with a top director at TeliaSonera at Barcelona’s Mobile World Congress and a legal team from one of the firms is also involved in the discussions. TeliaSonera controls 76.5 percent of Spain’s fourth mobile operator Yoigo. Telmex has long wanted to start business in Spain where its key rival Telefonica is the dominant operator.

   

 Telmex and Telcel under probe after Telefonica complaints (Mexico)

Telmex and Telcel are at the centre of four investigations in Mexico to see if they are abusing their dominant positions in the market, reports La Jornada. The Grupo de Telecomunicaciones Mexicanas (GTM), which belongs to Spanish telecoms giant Telefonica, has complained Telmex and Telcel are abusing their position in various markets such as in local fixed telephony.

   

 Telmex reaches 98% WiMAX coverage in Chile (Chile)

Telmex has announced that its WiMAX network now covers 98 percent of the population in Chile. The network reaches 91 percent of the communes in Chile, including Easter Island. Telmex received authorisation a year ago to launch the service and started offering broadband and voice services three months later.

   

 Telmex pledges not to increase tariffs in 2008 (Mexico)

Mexican telephony operator Telmex said it will not increase tariffs this year. In a statement, the operator said efficiency savings and productivity improvements at the company had allowed prices to drop in real terms for customers in the last few years. It said the basic basket of telephony products – line rental, average service, installation costs and long distance calls - had fallen in real terms by 40.1 percent since 2001. Telmex said it had also cut the price of its 1 Mbps Infinitum internet by 74 percent.

   

 Telmex to spin-off, list Latin America operations (Mexico)

Mexico-based operator Telmex has decided to spin off its Latin American and directories businesses into a separate company. The new company Telmex Internacional will be listed on the stock market in the US and Mexico. The move is expected to allow its domestic business in Mexico to further tailor its activities to focus on different market segments, as well as give each company a more competitive financial position. The proposed spin-off will be subject to approval by shareholders. In Mexico, the company also plans to divide its activities into two distint operations, one focused on competitive markets where it has around 9.8 million lines in service, and one focused on monopoly rural markets, where it has 8.3 million lines. A new business unit will be set up to manage operations and marketing at the loss-making rural activities, “in order to address their particular needs and monitor their development”.

   

 Telmex reports 3Q results (Mexico)

In the third quarter of 2007 Telmex reported consolidataed revenues of MXP48.1 billion (USD4.44 billion), 2.1% higher than the same period of 2006. Reveneues from operations in Mexico totalled MXP33.3 billion, up 0.7%, while Brazil generated MXP13 billion, up 5.8%. Consolidated EBITDA rose 11% to MXP20.5 billion, with domestic operations accounting for 81.8% of the total and Brazil 16.6%. Net income climbed 38.4% to MXP9.3 billion.

   

 

 Telmex seeks 450MHz spectrum(Argentina)

Telmex Argentina has asked regulatory body SeCom for spectrum in the 450MHz band so it can begin providing fixed wireless services using CDMA450 technology in 25 towns, reports BNamericas citing local newspaper El Cronista. CDMA450-based services are currently available in two towns: El Calafate in Santa Cruz, where provincial cooperative CoTeCal deployed a commercial network in October of last year, and Villa Gesell in the Buenos Aires province, where cooperative Cotel operates the network. The technology is gradually growing in popularity in South America: in January, Telmex opted to roll out CDMA450 in certain rural areas in Mexico rather than WiMAX, and in May Bolivia’s military said it was deploying a CDMA450 fixed wireless network for use in national security issues and for providing rural telephony to isolated regions.
