Bahrain’s telecoms watchdog, TRA extends the deadline for submission of bids for country’s third mobile licence to 11 January’09, catering to the requests made by the bidding companies. Rob Middlehurst, director of market and competition at the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) said registered parties have asked for more time to work out their bids.”Under the current economic conditions, TRA would like to give them ample time to pull together the right organization and consortium where necessary”, he said.
Four companies are reportedly registered to bid for Bahrain’s third mobile licence.

Syria plans 3rd mobile licence, Russian biggies show interest

The Syrian government plans to offer 3rd mobile licence in the country and is in talks already with the Russian mobile operators for the network launch. “They have an idea to add one more mobile operator there. The participation of Russian companies in the Syrian mobile market is possible,” Russia’s Communications Minister Igor Shchyogolev reportedly said.
The Russian number one MTS plans entering Syrian market if given an offer, MTS spokeswoman Irina Osadchaya stated, while Vimplecom confirms that Syria is a country it has looked at for its ongoing overseas expansion plans. Megafon also would like to give it a chance.
RCom may bid for Iran’s third mobile licence worth $1 Bn (India, Iran)

RCom, one of India’s leading mobile operator, is considering to bid for Iran’s third mobile licence worth $1 Bn. “Reliance has shown interest to bid for the tender and will compete with firms from Russia, Turkey and Malaysia for the tender, the bids for which will be called within a month,” claims an Iranian government official, covering 5Mn users in the first phase, 10Mn in second and 15Mn in the third phase. The Indian operator may have to compete with Qatar Telecom as a prospect bidder.

The Telecommunication Regulatory Authority, Bahrain, agrees to extend the bid submission deadline for the country’s third mobile licence. TRA had earlier recieved formal requests to extend the dealdline from the registered companies.
According to TRA companies can submit their bids until November end extended by nearly 2 weeks and will then announce the new timetable for evaluation.
