Virgin Mobile USA said Wednesday that it intends to make Yahoo’s mobile services available to all its 4.6 million subscribers.
The announcement comes as arch rival Google said it had inked a deal with handset maker LG. Both Yahoo and Google are vying for position, not only as the consumer’s preferred search brand but also for favourable deals with operators and manufacturers alike.
Virgin said in a statement that beginning April, Yahoo Mail and Yahoo Messenger will be available for download onto several existing Virgin handsets. In the future, Virgin said, that software will come pre-installed on selected phones.
In the UK, mobile operator 3 has already shipped Yahoo Go, on its X-Series. Last week Yahoo stole a lead on Google with the launch of its openSearch application that greatly improves local search results from a mobile phone.
Virgin said further announcements on additional Yahoo services would be made in the coming months, including a range of SMS services such as search and messaging.
3, the mobile media company, today announces the launch of a new range of free-to-access content for customers on its Planet 3 portal. Working in partnership with Rhythm New Media, the new service will be supported by personalised advertising from major brands, meaning content that was previously paid for can now be viewed for free by customers.
The new ad-supported service will be available to 3’s customers from April and represents the realisation of a new business model for the mobile content business. With the launch of ad-funded content 3 has significantly increased the range of video content available to customers for free. Video content been made available on the portal free includes a selection of news, comedy, celebrity gossip, animations and film. These services will continue to sit alongside existing premium entertainment and information services, such as full-length music tracks and mobile games.
Mobile advertising
3’s ad-funded video content offering presents brands with a new opportunity to deliver targeted and personalised advertising to a hard-to-access demographic. Brand advertising clients that have confirmed for the launch of the service in April include Microsoft and Unilever.
Brands will be able to buy advertising space based on the demographics of the customer watching it. Before viewing the free content for the first time customers will be asked to submit basic demographic data (age and gender) which can be used by brands to target their advertising more effectively. In addition, the advertising can be frequency regulated, meaning that a brand can define how many times an individual sees a specific ad, preventing wasted impressions and removing the risk of advertising fatigue.
Rhythm NewMedia is responsible both for the sales of the advertising inventory created by the launch as well as for serving the ads on the service itself.
Graeme Oxby, Marketing Director at 3 UK, said:
“We’re always looking at ways of bringing our customers great new content on the Planet 3 portal - things like our mobile games and music are already very popular and are generating millions of downloads. However, we also know that people want to browse around and watch stuff for free - by introducing advertising supported content we can massively increase the range of video clips available. Ad supported content is going to be an important part of the mobile world going forward.
Ujjal Kohli, CEO of Rhythm NewMedia, said:
“This launch offers advertisers an amazing new opportunity - the chance to deliver personalised advertising on mobile at an individual level. As well as selecting your target audience on demographic and content data, our ad-serving technology means you can decide what they see and how many times. For example, if you’ve got multiple ad treatments then we can let you control who sees which one, when and in what order.

The Silver package costs £5 per month, and lets users make unlimited Skype calles to other Skype users (both desktop and mobile) and Windows Live Messenger and Yahoo Messenger, as well as browse the internet. The Gold package costs £10 per month and also gives unlimited access to a user’s home TV via Slingbox and Orb. I don’t know how it compares to other data packages in Britain but it seems to be reasonably priced, enough to make place-shifting video services a reality. Of course, this comes on top of the fees for voice and test messages.
“Analyst John Delaney of Ovum, believes 3’s innovative approach to pricing for mobile internet would act as “a bellwetherâ€? for the UK and Europe. While he thought the pricing was well considered, he does not believe it will have mass market appeal…”If you as a consumer are interested in using the internet on your mobile then £5 a month (Silver package) is not going to be an obstacle to you doing it. However, what remains unanswered is whether people want to use the internet on their phones.â€?
Perhaps…they probably don’t want to use their phones like they use their PCs, but if the access is available people will most likely find some very new and interesting things to do with it, things that the telcos won’t think of.

Three is tying up with Ebay, Google and Skype!  - All of this spells “Good News” for the consumer. We’ll see how it is priced eventually. T-mobile came up with an all you can eat price plan with web’n'walk which was great! This would be one to watch.

Mobile firm 3 has agreed a tie-up with top internet firms in a move it claims will make the mobile internet work properly for the first time.
Third generation (3G) mobiles have proved a financial disaster as companies have struggled to interest consumers in using the new technology.
Firms spent billions on technology making it possible to surf the web or watch television through handsets.
But they found customers were only using them for simple phone calls.
Service promise
3, the company which launched Britain’s first 3G network, now says it is going to make the mobile internet more interesting.
It is launching a partnership with internet firms including Skype, Google and eBay.
The promise is that users will be able to make free internet phone calls, watch their home television on their phone and tap into their home computers on the move.
The price for all these services will be a flat-rate monthly fee.
Mobile phone companies often make big claims when launching new products - but analysts say 3’s move could change the industry.
