THUS plc today announced that it has been awarded a contract by Leeds Metropolitan University to deliver voice services over its advanced next-generation network, improving the resilience and reliability of the University’s communications infrastructure as well as delivering major accessibility improvements for staff, students and the wider community. THUS, one of the UK’s leading experts in communication solutions for the education sector, is providing 10,000 direct dial numbers to the University, enough to equip all its employees with a direct dial extension for the first time enhancing staff visibility and internal and external communication, and enabling improvements in efficiency.

Following a competitive tendering process THUS was awarded the new contract to deliver an estimated 220,000 minutes of calls a month through the university’s main campuses, Headingley campus and Civic Quarter. The new solution carries all University Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) call traffic across THUS’ next-generation network THUS is also providing an emergency divert service, which will allow the University to transfer incoming calls to another campus in the event of an emergency.

Tony Crossland, Development Leader, Computing Services, Leeds Metropolitan University, said, “The new network will significantly enhance our telephony services, making it easier for students and other stakeholders to call University staff, while reducing costs and ensuring we are prepared for any eventuality.”

THUS’ network is the ideal platform to enable Leeds Metropolitan University to migrate to advanced communications services such as Voice over IP (VoIP) in the future. By providing an easy migration path to its IP Exchange Lines service, which delivers IP connectivity from an organisation’s internal VoIP system to the PSTN, THUS’ scalable solution meets the University’s requirement for a future proofed investment.

Phil Male, Chief Operating Officer at THUS plc commented: “As one of the largest universities in the country with continued plans for growth, the University needed a reliable, secure and cost effective telephony service, from a supplier they could trust. THUS has extensive experience of delivering advanced communications services to the education sector, making it the supplier of choice for Leeds Metropolitan University.”
