Brazil’s justice ministry plants an eagle eye on top mobile operators (Brazil)
- August 26th, 2008
- 12:48 pm
Brazil’s justice ministry has begun an investigation into possible anti-competitive practices at the leading mobile operators Vivo, Claro, TIM and Oi. The companies together control over 95 % of mobile users in Brazil. Ministry is pointing finger at the operators for setting interconnection rates that prevent the successful entry of smaller operators on the market. In addition to the price squeeze, the competition authorities found evidence of possible collusion between Vivo, TIM and Claro to set interconnection rates. Ministry has asked market regulator Anatel to develop a cost-based model for determining the termination rates. Secretariat at the ministry, SDE, with the help of the competition authority DPDE is heading the investigation.
Subscribers in Italy will reach the mark of 96.8 mln in 2010
- August 18th, 2008
- 5:57 am
Italy has one of Europe’s most lively mobile markets, supported by a large population keen to try new services. Italy has the third highest penetration rate in the world with a 100% penetration rate in the 15 to 54 age range. With little room for growth in terms of subscriber numbers, competition between operators turns to pricing strategies which will cause ARPU to fall by 3.4% year on year from $34.7pcm in 2005 to $32.4pcm in 2007. Rising ARPU from data services and the ability of operators to distinguish themselves via data services remains the best opportunity for operators to stem falling ARPU.The market is dominated by three operators, while a fourth, 3 Italia, has struggled to make a profit or significantly expand its customer base. All four providers operate 3G networks, while investments in network upgrades have provided rich opportunities for mobile data use among consumers.
Notable highlights of Italy Mobile Forecast include:
- Wireless penetration levels in Italy will increase from our projected 156.4% in 2008 to our forecasted 163.4% (previously 165.3%) in 2010.
- Total subscribers in Italy to increase from 92.5 million in 2008 to 96.8 million in 2010.
- In 2010, market shares (by subscribers) of the four major operators in Italy will be 40.1%, 32.7%, 16.7% and 9.8% for TIM, OPI Vodafone, Wind, and 3 (Hutchison) respectively.
Brazil’s mobile market profile (Brazil)
- August 8th, 2008
- 6:06 am
Brazil’s mobile market is the fifth largest in the world, in terms of subscribers. Although Brazil holds almost one third of all the mobile users in Latin America, its mobile penetration is lower than the regional average. Brazil is lagging behind the rest of the region in SMS traffic, with text messages cost more than any other Latin American country. Number portability is to be implemented by March 2009. A 3G-spectrum auction in December 2007 was a huge success, and 2008 has been marked by 3G rollouts throughout the country with almost all operators – except for the market leader, Vivo – offering UMTS services.
A sale of 2.6 million mobile phones took place last month, Brazil reached 133.15 million mobile subscribers at the end of June’08, or 1.99% more than in May’08. The mobile penetration rate currently stands at 69.52 percent.
Brazil’s four major mobile operators, Vivo, TIM, Claro, and Oi, together hold about 91% of the market. Eight Brazilian mobile operators, Vivo, TIM Brasil, Claro, Oi, Brasil Telecom, Sercomtel, Nextel, and CTBC Telecom Celular, are reportedly functioning together to develop and launch IM services nationwide. Oi shows revenues up by 8.7%. Drop in Net profit, 46.8% to BRL 249 million, Mobile ARPU has improved to BRL 22.0 from BRL 21.3 in the first quarter, while churn increased to 6.8%.
New iPhone 3G commercials on air
- July 24th, 2008
- 7:30 am
Apple has begun airing iPhones ads around the world, feature similar aspects, but are stylized differently depending on the country in which they are aired. They feature a hand operating an iPhone 3G while a voice explains the possibilities of using newer 3G networks. The emphasis is on the speed of data transfer that the 3G networks allow, accelerating tasks such as surfing the web, finding directions and downloading, all of which can be done “really fast”. All of the ads feature the same background music and show of the same features but each show the features with country relevant information.
A second variation of the commercial has also shown up in Australia, it is shot in the exact same style but features slightly different dialogue.
Thus far the commercial has been spotted under four different carriers, Rogers/Fido, TIM, Optus Australia and Movistar.
