MTS has reportedly added 0.32 million new subscribers during July and the total reached 87.26 million subscribers.
MTS in Russia earned 0.48 million, the total being 61.86 million. MTS in Moscow added 0.03 million subscribers, to reach a total 14.14 million subscribers at the end of July. Subscribers in the rest of Russia numbered 44.71 million. In Ukraine, MTS lost 0.53 million subscribers, reaching 18.60 million. MTS also has 4.61 million subscribers in Uzbekistan, 0.64 million in Turkmenistan, 1.56 million in Armenia and 4.07 million in Belarus.

The Russian telecom market is the largest in Europe due to the size of its population. The country’s telecoms market is not homogenous due to country’s size and concentration of wealth in the west. A number of alternative operators offer services in the liberalised market and privatisation of state holding Svyazinvest is still underway. MTS, Vimpelcom and MegaFon, the country’s ‘Big Three’ cellular operators. In lieu of subscribers, Russia’s Mobile TeleSystems (MTS) had just 87 million cellular subscribers across Russia and the CIS countries at the end of June, an increase of 520,000 in three months. MTS is the largest cellular operator in its home market, with 61.38 million customers at 30 June 2008, international operations include:

Tele2 plans to apply for a licence which would allow it to begin offering cellular services in Moscow. Tele2 claims 9.3 million subscribers on its GSM networks across Russia. Megafon plans to invest $4.6 billion in Iran.
Apple Inc seems in no hurry to make deal with operators to sell the nifty device in these huge market of Russia officially. Russia is a home to almost half the world’s mobile users yet they are not considered.
The largest wireless telecom market in Europe (by subscribers) in 2010 will continue to be Russia. We are now forecasting that Russia will have a subscriber base of 188.5 million (previously 186 million in our 1Q08 forecast). Among them, 62.4 million will subscribe to MTS, and 56.6 million will subscribe to VimpelCom.
- We are increasing our projections on wireless penetration in the Russia market. We are now forecasting that the level of wireless penetration in Russia will increase from our projected 128.3% in 2008 to 134.6% in 2010.
- While MTS will have EBITDA margin of 51%, our models show VimpelCom to have profitability levels that are slightly lower with EBITDA margins of 50.7% in 2010.
- Market shares (by subscribers) of the largest three operators in Russia will remain roughly the same over the next several years. MTS, VimpelCom, and MegaFon will continue to have approximately 33%, 30% and 21% of total subscribers respectively from 2008 to 2010.
- ARPU’s in Russia will continue to rise in the coming years. We forecast that the average ARPU level among operators will increase from US$ 10.85 in 2008 to US$ 13.75 in 2010. Among major operators, VimpelCom will receive the highest ARPU of US$ 15.05 per month in 2010.

Mobile TeleSystems (MTS) added 0.64 million new subscribers during June, reaching a total of 86.94 million users. MTS subscribers in Russia totalled 61.38 million, up by 0.52 million versus the end of April. MTS added 0.08 million subscribers in Moscow and the Moscow region to reach a total 14.11 million subscribers at the end of May. Subscribers in the rest of Russia numbered 44.31 million. In Ukraine, MTS lost 0.24 million subscribers, reaching 19.13 million. MTS also has 4.37 million subscribers in Uzbekistan, 0.57 million in Turkmenistan, 1.49 million in Armenia and 4.03 million in Belarus.
MTS launches GPRS/EDGE (Turkmenistan)

MTS, via its Turkmen subsidiary Barash Communication Technologies Inc (BCTI), has announced the launch of GPRS and EDGE based services. According to Dmitry Shukov, director of the Turkmen operation GPRS services are currently available to just 300 Turkmen businesses, but will be extended to residential customers next month. Furthermore, the company claims to have applied for frequencies to develop WiMAX services.

MTS adds almost 2 million new subs in September (Russia)

Russian mobile operator group Mobile TeleSystems (MTS) ended September 77.97 million customers. During September, MTS added 1.91 million new subscribers across its mobile operators. In Russia the company ended the month with 54.42 million customers after adding 750,000 new customers. MTS in Ukraine lost 30,000 customers ending with 19.91 million subscribers. The Uzbekistan business added 110,000 new subscribers to hit 2.29 million and MTS Turkmenistan added 20,000 new customers to reach 290,000. Last month, MTS bought an indirect stake in VivaCell which ended September with 1.07 million subscribers. MTS Belarus (in which the company has a 49 percent stake) added 50,000 new subscribers during the month to reach a customer base of 3.66 million.

Mobile operator group Mobile TeleSystems (MTS) reported its total subscriber base reached 76.06 million users at the end of August. In Russia, MTS had 53.67 million mobile customers after adding 800,000 new customers in the month. MTS Ukraine added 110,000 new subscribers to reach 19.94 million, and MTS’ Uzbekistan operations ended August with 2.18 million customers after gaining 150,000 customers. In Turkmenistan MTS added 20,000 new users to reach a total of 270,000 and MTS Belarus ended August with 3.81 million customers and the company added 60,000 new subscribers during the month.

MTS sees 72% jump in profits (Russia)

Russia’s largest cellular operator by subscribers, Mobile TeleSystems (MTS), has reported a net profit of USD507.9 million in the second quarter, up 72% year-on-year thanks largely to increased traffic. Sales for the three months to the end of June were up 32% to USD1.97 billion on the back of increased average revenue per user (ARPU). In MTS’ domestic market ARPU rose from USD7.50 a month in 2Q 2006 to USD9.20 a month in the latest quarter, with total customer numbers across its operations in Russia, Belarus, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan reaching 74.67 million at the end of June.
MTS’ CEO, Leonid Melamed, commented: ‘A significant growth of revenues and net profit is evidence of the success of our efforts to stimulate traffic in the company’s main markets.’ He added: ‘We continue to roll out networks in the markets with low penetration, which allows us to raise their contribution into the company’s overall sales.’

Russian mobile operator group Mobile TeleSystems (MTS) saw its second-quarter revenues rise more than 30 percent on sustained growth in all the company’s markets. Revenues went up 32 percent to USD 1.97 billion from USD 1.49 billion in the year-ago quarter. OIBDA rose 39 percent on increased profitability throughout the group to USD 1.02 billion, versus USD 730.3 million, with an OIBDA margin of 51.7 percent. Net income was up 72 percent to USD 508 million, compared with USD 294.7 million in Q2 2006.
Russia contributed the bulk of the revenues at 75.3 percent, followed by 20 percent from MTS Ukraine, 2.9 percent from operations in Uzbekistan, and 2.1 percent from the Turkmenistan business. The company added approximately 500,000 new customers during the second quarter on a consolidated basis, all of which were added organically. In Russia, MTS had a leading market share in subscribers of approximately 33 percent. In Ukraine, the company’s market share was 39 percent, and in Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan market share stood at 56 percent and 83 percent respectively. In Belarus, the market share was 54 percent.

Russian mobile operator group Mobile TeleSystems (MTS) added 320,000 new users during July which brings its consolidated customer base to 74.99 million. In Russia, MTS ended July with 52.87 million subscribers after adding 190,000 new users. In Ukraine, the company added 20,000 customers reaching a total of 19.83 million, and in Uzbekistan MTS has 2.03 million customers, up by 90,000 in July. MTS Turkmenistan has a total of 250,000 customers and the company added 10,000 new users while MTS Belarus ended the month with 3.55 million after gaining 70,000 subscribers.

MTS ends June with 74.67 million mobile subs

Russian mobile operator Mobile TeleSystems (MTS) has seen its consolidated subscriber base hit 74.67 million at the end of June, up 16.5 percent year-on-year and 0.04 percent from the end of May. In Russia MTS signed up 530,000 new subscribers to end the month with a total of 52.68 million customers. MTS Ukraine again lost customers in June (610,000) and ended the month with 19.81 million, and MTS Uzbekistan’s customer base totalled 1.95 million, up by 100,000 new users. In Turkmenistan the company added 20,000 new subscribers to hit 0.24 million and MTS Belarus ended June with 3.48 million subscribers after adding 70,000 new customers.
