Pakistan ended 2007 with 76.61 million mobile phone users, up from 74.59 million in November, according to figures from market regulator the PTA. Mobilink was market leader with 30.66 million customers, followed by Ufone with 16.66 million. Telenor Pakistan is third with 14.60 million, while Warid finished the year with 13.21 million. Mobile teledensity reached 48.42 percent at the end of the year, versus 39.94 percent at the start of 2007.

The Pakistan mobile market grew to a total of 68.004 million mobile subscribers in August, up from 65.650 million in July, according to figures from the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority. Mobilink remained the largest operator, with 27.83 million customers versus 27.17 million in July. Ufone increased its base to 15.34 million from 14.77 million a month earlier, and Telenor grew to a total 11.98 million from 11.27 million. Warid finished the period with 11.48 million customers, versus 11.08 million in July, while Paktel grew to 1.04 million from 1.02 million. The number of fixed-line subscribers meanwhile fell to 4.806 million at the end of June, from 4.996 million in March. Wireless local loop customers increased to 1.934 million in August, from 1.878 million in July.

Pakistan had a total of 58.39 million mobile subscribers at end-April, up from 55.62 million at end-March, according to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA). Mobilink had the highest number of subscribers with 25.21 million subscribers, followed by Ufone with 12.49 million subscribers, Warid with 9.71 million subscribers, Telenor with 9.63 million subscribers, Paktel with 1.02 million subscribers and Instsphone with 0.33 million subscribers. The mobile density was 37.58 in April 2007 compared to 35.79 in March.

Huawei Technologies has won a USD 550 million contract to expand the GSM network of Pakistani mobile operator Ufone, a subsidiary of Etisalat. Huawei will provide its EnerG GSM platform to expand Ufone’s network to cover over 1,500 cities, towns, villages and all major highways in Pakistan. The network also allows Ufone subscribers to enjoy high-speed mobile data service. The GSM contract for Ufone also includes Huawei’s new GSM dual-density base station. Huawei will also provide the Mobile Softswitch solution based on R4 architecture to satisfy Ufone’s network expansion requirements.
