 Kyivstar adds 270,000 subscribers in January (Ukrain)

Ukrainian mobile operator Kyivstar reached a total of 23.872 million subscribers as of 1 February, some 270,000 more than on 1 January. The number of prepaid customers rose to 12.58 million from 12.37 million at the start of the year, and Djuice subscriptions increased to 9.22 million from 9.19 million a month earlier. Mobilych subscribers reached 0.813 million. The number of contract and corporate clients reached 1.25 million compared to 1.24 million on 1 January.

   

 Life:) to launch MVNO in Italy with 3 Italia (Italy)

Ukrainian mobile network operator life:) has announced plans to launch an MVNO in Italy to serve Ukrainians living and working there. Life:) Italy is set for launch in Q1 2008. Statistical data shows that over 200,000 Ukrainians live in Italy. Life:) will look to serve these residents using the network of UMTS operator 3 Italia. The MVNO will offer specially-priced tariffs for calls between Italy and Ukraine.

   

 Russian arbitration court affirms VimpelCom’s URS buy (Russia)

A Russian arbitration court has affirmed earlier rulings in favour of Russian communications group VimpelCom in the last remaining claim by Telenor. This latest ruling, which can be appealed, validates VimpelCom’s acquisition of Ukrainian Radio Systems (URS). Recently, Telenor also said it would end its dispute with shareholder Altimo over VimpelCom’s purchase of Ukrainian Radio Systems (URS). In 2005, VimpelCom bought URS for USD 231 million which caused a dispute between shareholders Telenor and Altimo as Telenor also controls rival Ukrainian operator Kyivstar. The shareholders are also involved in other disputes concerning other shareholdings.

   

 Telesystems launches EV-DO service, plans nationwide mobile network

Telegeography writes…Ukrainian CDMA operator Telesystems has launched commercial 1xEV-DO services in Kiev, Dnipropetrovsk and Odessa, under the brand name PEOPLEnet, over infrastructure supplied by Chinese vendor Huawei. The company told reporters yesterday that it has installed 103 base stations in the three cities and is testing a trial network of ten base stations in Kharkiv. It plans to increase its investment in its 1xEV-DO network to USD130 million this year from around USD50 million in 2006, and is aiming to deploy a total of 1,000 base stations by the end of 2008 to cover 80% of Ukraine’s population. Telesystems has provided 800MHz CDMA IS-95 WiLL services since 1997.
