 UTStarcom grabs BSNL contract worth Rs.300 crore (India)

UTStarcom has acquired a a Rs 300-crore contract from Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd to launch the broadband network that will support 1.1 million subscribers. During the first phase UTStarcom has alrady deployed a network that supports 1.3 million broadband subscribers. BSNL has launched its second phase of a countrywde network in December 2007. It is anticipated that with this network expansion BSNL accelerate its existing broadband connections on subscriber lines by more than 30 times the current speed.

Vice-President and Managing Director of UTStarcom’s South Asia, Vijay Yadav, said, “We worked closely with BSNL to successfully complete Phase I of this multi-play broadband network and we are pleased that the company has chosen to extend its relationship with us for Phase II of the deployment.”

 Zi penetrates in Asian mobile space with new licensing agreements (Canada)

A Canada-based provider of solutions for mobile search, text input and advertising, Zi Corporation is entering into several new licensing agreements within the Asian mobile space. Zi has extended its eZiText licensing agreements with Guohong Communication and Digital Technology Company, an OEM focused primarily on the Chinese domestic market, and with UTStarcom for its mobile device division in addition to the previously announced deal with UTStarcom’s IPTV set-top-box division.

Zi is also in agreement with China-based Longcheer Telecommunication, which has licensed eZiText in several languages for use in its mobile handsets. Zi believes that ZTE had licensed Decuma Chinese and English, and Lenovo has extended its licensing agreement for three years in order to continue to be able to use eZiText on all of its mobile handsets in China. Kyocera indicated that they will be integrating eZiText and eZiType across a range of Sanyo mobile devices, and Trolltech has integrated eZiText Chinese into its Linux development platform, the Qtopia Phone Edition.

 For sale: Personal communication unit of UTStarcom

UTStarcom has decided to sell its personal communications Division to a newly formed entity controlled by AIG Vantage Capital, a part of AIG Investments.

The expected transaction is approximately $240 million which will be based primarily on the net working capital levels, subject to certain criteria and  adjustments.

UTStarcom could also receive up to $50 million based on a three-year earn out provision in addition to the cash consideration.

This move by UTStarcom has been unanimously approved by its board of directors and is subject to customary closing conditions including debt financing.

The UTStarcom shareholder approval is not a factor in the completion of the transaction and the waiting period under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Antitrust Improvement Act has expired.

Subsequent to the transaction, the privately held company will be called Personal Communications Devices, LLC and will be led by the current management team who will be part-owners of the company with AIG Vantage Capital and other investors.

Merrill Lynch & Co. acted as financial advisor to UTStarcom.

   

 
 

 Tiscali Italia awards contract to UTStarcom

US vendor UTStarcom has been awarded a contract by ISP Tiscali Italia for the supply of multi-service access nodes to support the ISP’s deployment of 350,000 broadband lines capable of providing triple-play services of data, voice-over-internet protocol (VoIP) telephony and IPTV.

India’s One97 Communications plans to set up a 3G telecom and technology laboratory in cooperation with Hewlett-Packard. One97 said the research lab is powered by HP’s solutions which enable deployment of next-gen voice and video messaging, portals and enhanced interactive services.

Nokia Siemens Networks wins a GSM network expansion and services contract with Heilongjiang MCC. Under the deal, Nokia Siemens Networks will provide GSM base stations and base station controllers to Heilongjiang.

UTStarcom secures a deal to provide IPTV solutions to digital video firm Optibase. UTStarcom will integrate Optibase’s IPTV encoding platforms with its own IPTV solutions, which will then be deployed in India.

   
 

 UTStarcom signs contracts with United Telecom and BSNL

UTStarcom has announced a contract with United Telecom of Bangalore to deploy its fibre access solution to serve as the foundation for the new Statewide Area Network (SWAN) in the state of Goa. The network will provide high speed fibre connectivity across all state government offices in the area.

In separate but related news, UTStarcom also revealed that it has inked a deal with BSNL to provide 1.3 million broadband lines in 900 cities.

   

 Airtel and UTStarcom to launch IPTV

Telegeography writes….Bharti Airtel has announced that it is going to work with US equipment vendor UTStarcom to launch an IPTV service. The pair plan to launch the service in the capital New Delhi by the end of this year. Airtel is already testing IPTV services in limited regions in Delhi; the company plans to provide around 150 television channels at commercial launch.
