Vodafone, announced major upgradation of it’s wireless broadband network in Manchester.
It will be a multi-million pound investment, which will inturn, propel Vodafone’s wireless download speeds to as high as 5-Gigabytes per second, as well as offering a simplified billing structure to subscribers.
“Manchester, along with five other major conurbations, is now the fastest network in UK,” commented Alec Howard, head of PC Connectivity for Vodafone UK. “We have been heavily investing in the network so that when people are out and about they can get the same wireless experience that they do in the office.”
According to Howard, in addition to offering improved download speeds to Vodafone users, the newly upgraded network will also help to fuel business activity in Manchester.
“What’s really important for Manchester is that people travel from all over Britain to do business in Manchester and if they know that the wireless coverage is really good it will drive productivity,” he explained.

Telecommunication Authority (TRA), Oman, has invited bids for the country’s second national fixed-line licence.
As per the terms of the licence, the successful bidder will be awarded with a spectrum to enable wireless broadband.
According to TRA’s statement the contract for fixed-line services will be renewable after 25 years, while spectrum rights will have 15 years validity, with the option of renewing it for another 10 years.
Sources reveal that the government is looking for a company that will be able to invest at least $300 million within 5 years from the licence being awarded.
“The successful bidder will have to pay 7% of gross revenues to the government as royalty and pay an upfront fee of 500,000 rials (£677,000) on selection,” said Naashiah al-Kharusi, a regulatory official.
He commented that the bidder that can invest the maximum money in the backbone infrastructure will have a “competitive edge over the rest” in the selection procedure.
Prospective operators have until August 25 to submit bids. “The TRA reserves the right to pre-qualify a maximum of 10 bidders,” the regulator adds.
The inviting of second fixed-line will end the monopoly of Omantel.
