China Mobile Group, the parent company of Hong Kong-listed China Mobile Ltd, said third-generation mobile phone services based on China’s homegrown TD-SCDMA standard will enter commercial trials in eight cities starting April 1.
The company said it will launch trial services in Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Shenyang, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Xiamen and Qinhuangdao.
A total of 20,000 telephone numbers will be available for TD-SCDMA 3G services in the first phase for free, it said.
China Mobile Group said it will set up eight subsidiaries in the eight cities to operate TD-SCDMA business independently.
China Mobile Group will provide 20,000 selected users with free TD-SCDMA terminals and subsidies of 800 yuan each month.
China Mobile will also begin selling TD-SCDMA handsets and launch several TD-SCDMA service packages for walk-in customers.
China Mobile said the price of a TD-SCDMA terminal will be discounted by about 100-200 yuan, while TD-SCDMA subscribers will be given a 50 pct discount on phone charges.
