Verizon announces that mobile phone service provider will offer the new Motorola MOTOKRZR K1m.

The Motorola KRZR K1m flip phone is only 17mm thick and features V Cast Music, 1.9 inch screen, 1.3MP camera with 4x zoom, microSD card slot,

The Verizon press-release headline says that the K1m is loaded for fun. I guess that is why the Pussycat dolls are displayed on the KRZR screen.

Motorola introduced the KRZR K1m in July.

Roaming is one of the critical success factors for any network seeking to be a global standard, and WiMAX is no exception. So far, the main roaming activity has centered on the pre-WiMAX Wi-Bro system, with the formation of the Wi-Bro and Mobile WiMAX Community (WMC) by leading Asian operators plus Covad.

Now a new alliance has burst on the scene, spearheaded by another hotbed of early Wi-MAX activity, Australasia. Inaugurated last week in Paris, the WiMAX Spectrum Owners’ Alliance (WiSOA) has set itself an ambitious target of connecting a billion users (though in an unspecified time frame).

It limits its membership to companies that own licenses and operate WiMAX or pre-WiMAX services, contrasting with a previous, defunct attempt at creating a roaming group – the WiMAX Global Roaming Alliance (WGRA) – which was largely based around license exempt WISPs.

The contrast reflects the shift of the WiMAX movement away from such markets and towards carrier class, licensed band deployments, but the fading of the WGRA does not detract from the truth of its objectives, expressed by CEO Doug Bonestroo, when he said: “We realise that the larger telecom providers have a virtual lock on the 3G marketplace, and that the best way to counter that leverage is with a large group of partners in the US and around the world that are committed to standards-based WiMAX roaming.”

The WiSOA’s founder members contain four from Australasia – Unwired Australia and Austar Australia (part of the US-based Liberty Group of John Malone); Telecom New Zealand and Woosh Telecom – plus WiMAX Telecom of Austria, Enertel from the Netherlands, Network Plus Mauritius, UK Broadband and Irish Broadband.

All these were early adopters of broadband wireless networks, and many are now migrating these to fully standardised WiMAX, which will enable relatively straightforward roaming, technically speaking at least.

The members said they would sign their first international WiMAX roaming agreement in December, covering all WiMAX frequency ranges. This agreement, they claim, will act as the backbone of a future global network.

A further 12 members are on the point of joining the alliance it claims, with Reliance Telecom of India likely to head the queue. The WiSOA will act as the enabler and coordinator of roaming agreements between different WiMAX members, in a similar way to some alliances formed for Wi-Fi hotspots and metrozones, notably the Wireless Broadband Alliance. It points out that roaming revenues in the GSM world amount to $25bn a year.

Steve Cosser, chairman of Unwired Australia and a pay TV millionaire, will chair the WiSOA. He said at the Paris meeting: “WiSOA was established to facilitate the adoption of WiMAX globally, and with its exclusive membership of spectrum owners only, is in a unique position to do so.”

It will work with the WiMAX Forum but has a more specific remit, which it may feel the forum has not prioritised – to accelerate roaming deals and, in so doing, to ensure that the value of licensed spectrum is fully realised by both government bodies and investors.

Orange service rivals BT’s Fusion

Orange has announced a residential fixed/mobile convergence service to go live in the UK later this year. Called Unique, the service will be available to customers who take both broadband and mobile contracts from Orange.

This residential service provides competition for BT’s Fusion package, which allows users to connect through a Bluetooth wireless connection and have calls routed through BT’s broadband infrastructure. In contrast to BT, Orange will use Wi-Fi connections to route calls through its broadband service. Users will not need to upgrade to the 8Mbit/s service recently introduce by Orange across upgraded exchanges.

Current Analysis analyst Sandra O’Boyle said, “The service is essentially the same as BT Fusion, so they [Orange] will come in for some flak for marketing it as Unique, but the concept of cheaper calls at home is a good one, as is the move towards a single phone number.”

The new service will also require dual-mode handsets, including the Nokia 6136, which Orange said will be free to users signing up for the service. Users can have six Unique phones per home and Orange said that up to three people can make Wi-Fi phone calls simultaneously, even if the web is also being accessed.

BT’s Corporate Fusion for businesses is slated to launch early next year, and Orange said that it will have a similar service at around the same time.

Orange prompts customers to leave their details to be informed when the system will be available. Pricing will start from £50 per month.

Zeta Jones dropped as face of T-Mobile

T-Mobile has told Catherine Zeta Jones that she is being dropped as the face of the company.

The actress has appeared in adverts for the mobile phone operator and acted as a spokeswoman since she was signed up in 2003. Her contract, which ends in early 2007, will not be renewed.

T-Mobile wants a more “man on the street” image, according to ITV, to help its internet products take customers from telecoms rivals.

Spokesman Peter Dobrow, thanking her for her efforts, said: “When Catherine Zeta Jones agreed to be our spokesperson four years ago, we could never have imagined the cache appeal she would have brought to T-Mobile.

“Her style, credibility and integrity have been a tremendous benefit for our company and our brand,” he continued. “We could not have asked for a better partner in launching T-Mobile than Catherine Zeta Jones.”

BHUBANESWAR: In the face of growing competition from private players, the BSNL, Orissa Circle, has decided to make landline connections and mobile services more economical from October 1.

Landline customers paying Rs 180 per month will henceforth pay Rs 150 and those paying Rs 150 will now pay Rs 130. Monthly rental has been slashed by Rs 20 for customers paying Rs 120.

For new connections, registration fee has been decreased by 50 percent from Rs 500. Chief General Manager, Orissa circle, U N Mahallik said these steps would help in arresting the dwindling number of landline customers.

Talking to mediapersons here on Friday, Mahallik also announced that ‘Excel Anant’ sale value will come down to Rs 699 from Rs 949 for three months from October 20 to December 18. Value of talktime will be increased from Rs 99 to Rs 199.

SIM cost both for prepaid and postpaid will be Rs 100 from October 1. Also postpaid CellOne would be converted to Excel prepaid on payment of Rs 112 from October 1.

Further, 200 free SMS scheme will be offered to all new prepaid subscribers for first two months from October 1.

Mahallik said, BSNL would also start a ‘Bundling of handset scheme’ from October 9. This will be available with Nokia and Motorola sets and free SIM.

Besides, additional talktime of Rs 150 will be extended to customers for 24 months using recharge voucher of minimum value of Rs 200 per month.
