Telecompaper writes…Germany will auction of more UMTS licences in 2008, using frequencies in the 2.6 Gigahertz range, according to the president of the German telecommunications regulator BNA, Matthias Kurth in an interview with the Berliner Zeitung. He calls those licence very interesting on technology and economic bases. The preparations for the auction will start during this year. Kurth could not say if the current holders of German UMTS licences, T-Mobile, Vodafone, O2 and E-Plus, will participate in the new UMTS auction, but the regulator expects at least one new player will try to enter the German mobile market. This could lead to a defensive strategy of the other operators, who will then join the auction to prevent the newcomer to achieve a cheap market entry.
