Digitalspy writes…Customers will pay for mobile TV services, says 3′s marketing director, Graeme Oxby.

Speaking at the Broadcast Mobile TV Congress in London this morning, the network’s marketing head said that future of mobile was promising, as many of its customers in the UK were already users of the service.

Of 3′s 3.9 million subscribers across all services, 20% are using mobile TV services in any one month.

Oxby also pointed to 3′s success with music downloads, and its position as the second most popular service after Apple’s iTunes, as an indicator of where it would be with mobile TV in 18 months time.

“People are spending money to get entertainment on the move..mobile TV provides broadcasters with opportunities to do new things that they might find difficult on a normal broadcast platform,” he said.

In January 3′s free-to-customers ad-funded Celebrity Big Brother service saw 1.2 million downloads in 3 weeks, with 1 million of those paid for by the advertiser.

Its World Cup coverage created 3.6 million users of mobile TV services for the network, with 638,000 watching its made-for-mobile TV show, Berlin or Bust.

Oxby added that the key factors for the development of the service were creating simpler pricing, making the service easier to use and production of more made-for-mobile content.

BBC turns on mobile TV trial

FierceMobileContent writes…The British Broadcasting Corporation announced plans to trial mobile TV services in partnership with U.K. operators Orange, Vodafone and 3. The trial begins in April and will include the Beeb’s flagship channels BBC One, BBC News 24 and BBC Three; eight radio stations are also included in the service. “By making a range of television channels and radio networks available to 3G mobile phone subscribers, we hope to test not only the effectiveness of 3G as a means of distribution, but also how audiences respond to the BBC’s linear services on their mobiles,” said BBC director of future media and technology Ashley Highfield in a prepared statement. “The findings, combined with quantitative and qualitative consumer research, will inform the BBC’s future mobile strategy.”

Sprint revamping TV service

FierceMobileContent writes…News from CTIA: Sprint may not be clamoring to sign up for a broadcast mobile network, but the company is committed to its Sprint TV service. In fact, the carrier says on April 1 it will debut a revamped mobile TV offering that will offer a simpler pricing structure that is easier for the customer to understand.
John Burris, vice president of wireless data at Sprint, said the company is still bullish on video content even though the operator has not committed to a broadcast TV solution, such as Qualcomm’s MediaFLO platform. He also said Sprint wants to “own the mobile TV market” but that right now it can’t justify a broadcast model based upon existing usage. “Right now we don’t need broadcast,” Burris said in an interview with FierceMobileContent. “We are meeting our customers’ needs with 1xEV-DO.”

Park University hopes the academic phones will enable its large international student population to more easily obtain wireless phones and connect with the school’s community.

As part of the agreement, Sprint Nextel extended its network on campus to provide coverage to more than 1 million square feet of underground building space. Park University will roll out the program during the fall semester.

WirelessWeek writes…Carl-Henric Svanberg, CEO of Ericsson, told Sweden’s newspaper Svenska Dagbladet today that he expects to make more acquisitions over the next five years to boost the company’s multimedia arm, though network equipment would remain the company’s largest business. “There will be more acquisitions on the multimedia side. We do not need to take a breath just because we have made several acquisitions,” he told the paper.

Ericsson recently bought Norwegian digital broadcast systems maker Tandberg Television and IP messaging components company Mobeon as part of its plan to build up its multimedia division.

He said Ericsson’s recent acquisitions were helping it catch up with competitor Alcatel-Lucent in television and fixed networks and that his company was benefiting from the merger of the two competitors into one firm.

Telegeography writes…In the wake of the successful award of a third mobile licence to Mobilkom of Austria in January this year, the Macedonian government has reportedly announced its intention to license a fourth mobile network operator to further boost competition in the sector. According to a report from Skopje-based Makfax online, the regulator, the Agency for Electronic Communications, will issue a public notice on the introduction of fourth mobile operator, subject to it receiving interest from bidders in the international community. The terms and criteria for the fourth network operator will be specified in due course.

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski announced plans to license a third mobile operator to compete with the country’s two incumbents — T-Mobile Macedonia (formerly MobiMak) a wholly owned subsidiary of national PTO T-Com Macedonia, and Cosmofon, run by Greek telco OTE’s mobile arm Cosmote in September 2006. The tender began in December 2006, under the terms and conditions of which the successful bidder was required to pay a one-off upfront payment of at least EUR5 million for rights to the frequency spectrum. Two months later, Mobilkom of Austria’s bid to become the country’s third mobile operator was approved by the government. The Austrian firm was the sole company to enter a bid, offering EUR10 million (USD13 million) for the ten-year (renewable) GSM licence.

Turkcell makes offer for BTC

Telegeography writes…Turkish mobile operator Turkcell has confirmed it has made an offer for a 65% stake in Bulgaria’s dominant telecoms firm BTC. Since the start of the year Iceland’s richest man Thor Bjorgolfsson has been considering selling his option on the 65% stake and last month appointed Lehman Brothers to shortlist investors interested in the acquisition. Turkcell, which faces growing competition at home, signed a USD3 billion syndicated loan last month and its new chief executive, Sureyya Ciliv, said the firm could use it to invest in eastern Europe, the Middle East and Central Asia; it had six months to make use of the loan.

Media reports have said besides Turkcell, Turkey’s fixed line operator Turk Telecom and private equity investment funds Providence Equity Partner, Texas Pacific Group, Warburg Pincus and Mid-Europa Partners are also eyeing the deal. Novator has said it expects Lehman to have proposals on how to proceed with the deal at the end of April at the latest. A source familiar with the process has told Reuters that Lehman Brothers is talking to interested strategic and private equity fund investors that have placed initial offers with them. He said Lehman would most likely propose Novator opens talks with up to six interested bidders for the sale that is expected to be finalised in June
