Croatia set to get its first MVNO

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: A new operator Telcro and T-Mobile Hrvatska have signed a contract as a result of which Croatia will get its first MVNO. The services are set to launch during the summer of 2009.

The company has funding from twenty investors of which the bulk are Croatian and the remainder based in the USA.

According to company director, Kre…¡imir Profaca, an MVNO can be profitable with just a few tens of thousands of subscribers, compared to the millions needed by the network operators and although the market is being saturated, thanks to multiple SIM ownership the real penetration rate could be as low as 60%.

Mobile Broadband Network Limited (MBNL), the 50:50 joint venture formed by 3UK and T-Mobile UK to manage the integration of both operators’ 3G radio access networks (RAN), has awarded Ericsson a four-year managed services contract for the operation and maintenance of the consolidated network.

T-Mobile and 3 formed their infrastructure sharing agreement in January 2008 with the aim of creating the UK’s most extensive 3G network by 2010. This ground-breaking network collaboration will deliver close to complete nationwide population coverage for 3G services and significantly improve in-building signal strength. The agreement will also deliver substantial cost savings as well as environmental benefits, including the decommissioning of an estimated 5,000 cell sites.

Under the terms of the agreement, Ericsson has responsibility for the operation and performance management of both parent companies’ 3G networks and T-Mobile’s 2G RAN infrastructure. The four-year contract will enable MBNL to control operational expenses and deliver high service levels at a time when the 3G network consolidation is moving into the mass deployment phase.

The first integrated cell site was commissioned in early February 2008. Since then MBNL has concluded a pilot in the Leeds and Bradford area which successfully validated the network sharing technology and is now engaged in consolidating the radio access networks across the UK.

Around 80 employees from T-Mobile have been transferred to Ericsson, further strengthening its existing UK managed services capability. In the UK, Ericsson holds separate managed services contracts with T-Mobile and 3. T-Mobile and 3 are both global Ericsson customers.

Emin Gurdenli, Chief Technology Officer for T-Mobile UK, says: “The appointment of Ericsson is another significant step towards realizing our commitment to create and operate the UK’s most extensive 3G network. Partnering with a proven and progressive services organization reinforces our intent to deliver superior, high-speed mobile data services to customers across the UK.”

Mats Granryd, Managing Director, Ericsson UK, says: “We are delighted and proud to be given the responsibility of operating the radio access network for MBNL. This is an extremely exciting and bold project and we are entirely committed to playing our part in achieving success for MBNL’s parent companies.”

Graham Baxter, CTO, 3 UK, says: “The deployment of our consolidated mobile broadband network is advancing rapidly. Having Ericsson as a trusted partner operating the access network will be an important contribution to our overall goals of providing a reliable and high performance service.”

The contract with Ericsson is the latest of a number of key supplier agreements awarded by MBNL in recent months for the provision of 3G radio network infrastructure and a five-year managed service contract for the supply of high-speed Ethernet connections to 7,500 cell sites.

Mobile and MaxOnline hubbers are set to enjoy even greater benefits as StarHub launches ‘Home Zone’, the world’s first commercially-available 3G femtocell service. 3G femtocell is a portable cellular access device that connects a user’s 3G mobile phone directly to a MaxOnline-enabled router in the home so that users can make voice and video calls and send SMS over StarHub’s cable network from their mobile phones.

StarHub is making all local outgoing voice, video calls and SMS free for customers using the ‘Home Zone’ service, ensuring that users, who make frequent mobile calls and SMS from home, can enjoy significant cost-savings on their mobile phone bills.

As the operator that frequently delivers new innovations to the Singapore market, we see tremendous potential in the ‘Home Zone’ service which uses the 3G femtocell technology. While services such as Voice-over-IP (VoIP) have been available for some years, these are restricted to VoIP-enabled mobile phones. The beauty of the 3G femtocell technology is that all 3G-enabled phones are supported and customers do not need to purchase special handsets to take advantage of it,” said Mr Anil Nihalani, Head of Mobile and Communications, StarHub.

‘Home Zone’ supports all 3G mobile usage. While all outgoing local voice calls, video calls and SMS are free – MMS, IDD calls, mobile downloads, mobile surfing and other GPRS activities conducted over the mobile device will be charged at standard published rates. StarHub mobile customers on eligible plans can even make Free IDD 018 calls to 18 destinations using the ‘Home Zone’ service. Local call charges will however still apply.

As an added bonus, besides his/her own mobile number, the subscriber can nominate up to three other StarHub mobile numbers to a white-list that will be recognised by the ‘Home Zone’ service. This means that up to four StarHub 3G mobile users can call out simultaneously over a single ‘Home Zone’ connection, each of the callers being able to enjoy the same benefits.

Mr Nihalani said, The ‘Home Zone’ service demonstrates the true benefits of hubbing with StarHub. By extending the ability to use the ‘Home Zone’ service to immediate family members, hubbing families who are our 3G mobile and MaxOnline customers, will be able to get more out of it with better cost-savings and convenience.”

The ‘Home Zone’ VAS is offered at a monthly subscription of $30 (without GST). However, customers who subscribe to the VAS from now till 31 December 2008 can enjoy a special 50% discount for 12 months. The ‘Home Zone’ device will be offered on loan free of charge to ‘Home Zone’ users.

With the launch of third-generation iPhone in Taiwan, Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan’s largest telecom service provider in terms of revenue is hoping to pull more subscribers and enhance revenue. CHT will begin selling iPhones from Dec. 13.

Executive Vice President Lin Jen-Hon said, “We hope our revenue and subscribers will increase after the launch of iPhone.” He further said Chunghwa will seek to “satisfy all customers’ demand” for the iPhone, but declined to give specific figures on sales targets.

For the period from January-October, telco’s revenue rose 0.1% to NT$155.46 billion from NT$155.25 billion a year earlier. The subscriber base totals to 8.87 million and 3.24 million 3G users as of September.

Chunghwa doesn’t have exclusive rights to sell the iPhone in Taiwan, Lin added. Taiwan Mobile Co., the competitor of CHT is in no mood to negotiate with Apple to sell iPhones as of now.

“The economy is very bad now. Selling the phone would mean subsidizing the iPhone heavily, so we don’t have any current plan to do so,” said Rosie Yu, Taiwan Mobile’s spokeswoman and vice president for finance.

LG’s highest specification camera phone to date has now been released on a second UK network operator, after an initial launch on Orange consumers can now connect the new LG Renoir to a range of O2 pay monthly tariffs which almost doubles the number of packages available for this 8 megapixel camera phone.

The LG KC910 Renoir is seen as the automatic upgrade to the extremely popular KU990 Viewty model which is still being sold in the UK, it incorporates much of the technology of the original model with a large touchscreen and advanced camera functions but the most significant difference is the upgraded camera lens which now offers a whopping 8 megapixels.
This new LG phone not only gives its rivals some serious competition but also threatens stand alone digital cameras, why take two devices with you when leaving the home when the LG Renoir covers both functions?
Add to this the latest version of LG’s music player and you could negate the need of a third device in the form og a stand alone MP3 player, before you know it the new LG KC910 Renoir has got the majority of your gadgets functions covered and you leave your home far lighter than before.
The LG Renoir does face some competition directly from the mobile phones market in the form of devices from rival manufacturers, the Sony Ericsson C905 and the Samsung Pixon both offer a similar 8 megapixel camera lens but both models offer a different design.
The most striking difference between the C905 and the Renoir is the sliding design of the Cybershot phone, not always to consumers taste the Sony Ericsson C905 opts for a slide out keypad as opposed to the large touchscreen of the Renoir.
The LG Renoir is a real multimedia powerhouse, packed with a whole load of extras. Equipped with an 8 megapixel auto focus camera, Xenon flash, Schneider-Kreuznach lens, ISO up to 1600 and VGA video capture at 30fps and in QVGA at up to 120fps for slow motion, this is one of the best camera handsets on the market.
The LG KC910 is the first feature phone from the manufacturer to offer Wi Fi connectivity, in addition it extends the functionality of the Viewty with built-in GPS – photos can be geo-tagged with the coordinates of the place of capture so users can tag a photo to the location they took it and then share with friends.
The LG Renoir is a quad-band GSM with support for HSDPA 7.2 Mbps, has Bluetooth 2.0 and USB. The extras of the KC910 include microSD card slot for up to 8GB of extended memory, Wi-Fi, 3-inch WQVGA 240×400 touch display and TV-out for displaying images or videos on a larger screen TV or projector and Xvid and DivX video playback.
The KC910 combines polyphonic ringtones with MP3 technology, this can produce a high quality ringtone that allows for truly hi-fi quality speech or music as your tone before using the 50 MB internal phone memory for storage of pictures and these ringtones.
Although initially launched on both Orange and O2 networks in the UK there are further releases planned by the other UK networks over the coming weeks, the LG Renoir is also expected to be offered as a Pay As You Go mobile phone as well as a SIM free handset with no network ties.
The two latter payment options will be great news for consumers as we run into the festive period, the LG KC910 Renoir will be able to be purchased as a gift as both a Pay As You Go or SIM free handset as there is no need to register the device at point of purchase.

Western Union has initiated piloting a mobile money transfer scheme for Phillipino workers in Hawaii and the United Arab Emirates, both countries with significant financial flows to the Philippines, where many users’ handsets are equipped with mobile wallet capabilities. The uniqueness of this trial is the degree to which the Philippines has retail and business structure where m-wallets can be used. Almost 6000 locations around the country can transact in this way.

The process is as follows:
•   On the Hawaiian/UAE side, senders simply give cash at the test locations in UAE and Hawaii
•   Western Union then encodes and sends transactions to recipients back in the Philippines.
•   Recipients can choose to transact directly from their m-wallets or convert stored credit into cash at    participating stores.
However, senders still need to visit particular locations, recipients are now freed from transacting at a limited number of outlets.

Zain Ghana launches a drive of pre-registration of numbers for the new subscribers on its network. The launch was mainly meant for mdia personnels, who were presently using other networks minus the network code, registered with the Zain 026 code. Mr Philip Sowah, Country Manager of Zain Ghana, noted that the drive was a nationwide one designed to make it convenient for prospective Zain subscribers to choose their own numbers, especially the ones they are familiar with on the networks they already use. “Interested persons can pre-register numbers of their choice on the Zain pre-registration website, ichoose.gh.zain.com,” he said. He said Zain was currently working on the quality of its network ahead of the actual launch of services “soon”. “Our network capacity is so huge we are scared in a good way – that there may not be enough subscribers to use the network in the short-term,” he said, assuring its prospective subscribers of enough network capacity to accomodate subscribers for next one and a half year.
He additionally said that Zain’s call tariffs are cometetive and would not be a part of the price war with others, ensuring better value to its subscribers.
