T-Mobile to launch Samsung SGH-t349-rumours (USA)

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: T-Mobile is rumored to roll-out the Samsung SGH-t349, a candybar cell phone that features a 20-key hybrid QWERTY keypad.  The handset appears to be as a messaging phone, should also sport a 1.3 megapixel camera with video capture. According to  a report, this phone should be available from T-Mobile for both prepaid and post-paid subscribers on or around May 20. The pricing details are not yet disclosed. The Samsung SGH-t349 is also reported to adorn Bluetooth connectivity, for wireless handsfree headsets, as well as a built-in speakerphone and support for T-Mobile’s Mobile Backup service.

NTT DoCoMo’s posts a subscriber base of 4.60Mn at March’09-end (Japan)

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: NTT DoCoMo, Japan’s leading mobile operator, has posted revenues of JPY 4.448 trillion for the fiscal year ending March 2009, a fall of 5.6% since a year earlier, as the discount price scheme hit service revenues. The operating profits grew to JPY 831 billion from JPY 808 billion as lower handset sales reduced costs, whereas net profit dropped to JPY 472 billion from JPY 491 billion.
DoCoMo’s new growth strategy launched a year ago brought in reduced churn, to 0.5% since last year when churn rate stood at 0.8%. On the other hand, new discount price schemes such as Fami-Wari Max50 led to a 10.2% drop in ARPU, to JPY 5,710.
The Japanese operator added 1.21 million new subscribers, taking the total to 4.60 million at end-March, of which almost 90% used the Foma 3G services.
DoCoMo said that the operator will continue with its sharp pricing policy, calling for further reductions in data and group price plans, as well as enhanced customer service and loyalty programmes.
The operator also plans to start its HSUPA services at up to 5.7 Mbps upload from June’09. The operator further forecasts revenues to drop to JPY 4.382 trillion this year, operating profit is estimated flat at around JPY 830 billion, while net profit should grow to JPY 493 billion. Subscriber additions are expected to be sluggish nearly 116,000, while ARPU will drop further to an estimated JPY 5,280.

MTN Uganda plans investment of $170Mn

MTN’s Chief Technical Officer Francis Kazinduki said some of the investment will be channeled towards launch of regional switching centres in Tororo, Mbarara and Masindi. Presently, the arena caters five telecommunications service providers with each trying to improve efficiency and providing competitive tariffs.

Govt. to set MVNO fees, if negotiation fails (Israel)

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: Israeli Government will interfere and set mobile virtual network operators fees to be paid for hosting their services, if negotiations between the MVNO and network operators fail. The country’s ministry of communications (MoC) has reportedly published a hearing that states that companies looking to set up MVNO operations have up to six months to negotiate the terms for hosting with a prospective network operator. MoC will investigate the event if the reason for the failure for negotiation is anti-competitive conduct. 012 Smile.Com, Hot and Mirs Communications have shown interest in setting up MVNO operations.

MetroPCS & Samsung Mobile launch Samsung Tint in USA

The sleek, compact flip design handset offers grey and pink faceplates as a standard accessory, with additional faceplates also available in various colours, along with customisable wallpaper, banner themes and fonts.
The handset features an integrated camera, SMS, MMS, e-mail and IM messaging capabilities, advanced voice recognition, Bluetooth wireless technology and speakerphone. China carriers select LG to supply 3G phones

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: The world’s third positioned, mobile handset maker, LG. has been selected to supply third generation (3G) mobile phones to all three carriers in China. As Chinese operators roll out the long-waited advanced mobile services this year, the market for 3G handsets in China is estimated to more than double to 30 million units in 2010 from 14 million this year, LG reportedly said.

LG is also set to provide about one third of the 3G handsets China Telecom (0728.HK) needs this year, LG further said. China Unicom, which intends to provide WCDMA-based 3G services, has also picked LG to supply 3G phones.

Dovetel Tanzania plans to roll-out fixed wireless services

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: Dovetel Tanzania is intending to launch fixed wireless services before the end of May. CMO Christian Haeger reportedly said if things go according to plan, the company will reveal its new name and starts services by the end of next month. Dovetel is in deal with Rapro, M-Tel and Blue Star, which will deal in Dovetel’s mobile phones, fixed desk phones, USB modems and Wi-Fi routers.

In the beginning, the firm will be serving customers in Dar es Salaam, where the network is being tested and where it plans four of its own shops. The name under which company plans to launch the services is Kiswahili brand name to mirror the Tanzanian roots of the company.

According to Haeger, Dovetel will focus on internet and fixed phone services using CDMA EVDO technology.
