www.WirelessFederation.com/news: BSNL targets a 3G subscriber base of 100,000 by Sept. (India) State run PSU, BSNL has unveiled that it is targeting a 3G subscriber base of 100,000 by September. Presently, the next generation service is available in 70 cities and has gained just 9,000 subscribers since launching 3G in February 2009. The company’s Chairman and Managing Director, Kuldeep Goyal, reportedly said that BSNL hasn’t begun actively marketing and advertising the service, and won’t do so until July when the 3G network covers 150 cities. By March 2010 the company to cover 1,000 cities and achieve a 3G subscriber base of 1.2 million. MTNL has so far gained just 400 3G subscribers since the launch of the network a month ago. The operator anticipates reaching 300,000 subscribers mark in the first year.

Vodafone Fiji allows internet access to prepaid subscribers

The service which was earlier restricted to the postpaid subscribers, now caters to nearly 600,000 subscribers. “The launch of our prepaid mobile internet is exciting news for most of our customers, 90 per cent of who are on pre-paid plans”, said Pradeep Lal, the company’s acting managing director.
“With pre-paid Internet accessible over mobile phones, we now provide wireless Internet service without contract, monthly subscriptions or activation fees,” he said.

“All a subscriber needs is a web-enabled phone and normal credit on their mobiles to access Internet anywhere, anytime at their convenience.”

Vodafone CR replaces free SMS offer for ads service with data bundles

www.WirelessFederation.com/news:Vodafone Czech Republic has replaced its SMS Gratis service, which offered students free SMS in exchange for viewing ads, with a new service. The new service offers students the Student Online bundle for mobile internet access for CZK 89 per month and the Student Extra bundle. Student Extra bundle gives all students using any Loaded tariff an additional CZK 150 for calling and SMS messages for a fee of CZK 150.
Vodafone says it has made changes to Student SMS Gratis as surveys have shown that students want to be online and would rather chat or use social network services on their mobiles to communicate with their friends instead of sending SMS messages.
The replacement also addresses the fact that advertisers who want to address students have far greater interest in mobile advertising on the Vodafone live! portal than in advertising through the SMS Gratis service. The Student SMS Gratis service remains active until 19 August.

Tata Teleservices to invest $2 billion in GSM network expansion (India)

The operator promises one paisa per second for all calls – locals and STD, he said the company’s next gen GSM service with an aggressive back to back roll out plan started its GSM service in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Orissa covering a total a total of 20,847 towns and villages.

Vodafone considers acquisition of T-Mobile in UK

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: Vodafone is eyeing the T-Mobile UK bid, a move which will have an influence over the British mobile market. The world’s largest mobile operator by revenue is considering the bid to acquire T-Mobile UK, which has an estimated enterprise value of €3bn-€4bn ($4.2bn-$5.6bn) even though any transaction runs the risk of being blocked by regulators.

According to the sources, Vodafone is examining the case to make an offer for the acquisition, or a setting up a Joint Venture.
If the deal turns out to be successful, Vodafone will then hold 40% share of revenues earned from the British mobile subscribers.

iPhone 3G S to launch in New Zealand on 10 July – Vodafone

Contract prices and “handset subsidies” for people subscribing to different data plans will be announced closer to the launch date, says the company.

Qtel heads towards 2Mn mobile subscribers mark (Qatar)

Bell & Telus likely to offer Apple iPhone 3G S in 2009 (Canada)
