T-Mobile launches the UK’s first
Pay-As-You-Go Android handset today, signalling the rise of cheaper smartphones.
The T-Mobile Pulse, manufactured by Huawei, has the largest Android
touchscreen yet, matching the iPhone in size (3.5 inches). It has a
3.2 megapixel camera and comes with a 2GB SD card. It also features GPS, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity.
The phone is available for £176 approximately, making it significantly cheaper than rival smartphones.
The T-mobile Pulse follows its predecessor, the T-Mobile HTC G1 which was the first
Android phone to hit the UK and was launched last year.

Mobile operators are facing defeat in their battle against EU plans to regulate
international roaming rates, after the EU’s Advocate General ruled that the price caps were valid.
Luis Miguel Poiares Pessoa Maduro, the Advocate General and a key adviser to the European Court of Justice, ruled recently that the regulation is in the interests of the internal market in which ‘free movement of goods, services and capital is ensured’.
His decision is non-binding but in vast majority of cases rulings by Advocate Generals are heeded by the European Court of Justice. The final ruling will be delivered over the coming months.
Maduro said in a statement: ‘The differences in price between calls made within one’s own member state and those made while roaming could reasonably be regarded as discouraging the use of cross-border services such as roaming.’
The case was referred to the European Court of Justice in 2007 by the UK High Court.

operators over the iPhone. Orange announced on September 28 and Vodafone on September 29 that they have successfully forged an alliance with Apple to launch the iPhone on their respective networks in the UK. T-mobile and 3 may be announcing something shortly too.
In an attempt to lure customers to the data-happy iPhone, mobiel operators will have to increase subsidies on the iPhone. Meanwhile, the cost of other handsets will have to rise as a result. Operators could shift subsidies from other vendors, such as RIM, HTC and Samsung, thus increasing their handset prices.
Orange will be selling the iPhone before
Christmas, while Vodafone will only be able to launch it early 2010.
O2 has been bit hard by Apple’s decision to remove its exclusive rights on the iPhone after two years. It is thought the network may now look at alternative devices, such as the Palm Pre or Motorola’s android based range of phones to boost revenues.

O2 has revealed plans to test long-term evolution (LTE) of 3G
technology in the UK within the next few months.
Telef³nica announced this week that it will do trials of the
Long Term Evolution of 3G networks (LTE) within the next few months across UK, Spain, Germany, the
Czech Republic, Brazil and Argentina.
Telefonica’s O2 in the UK will be the first operator in the UK to carry out LTE trials. T-Mobile, Vodafone and Orange are all expected to follow O2′s lead in the future.
LTE will allow Telef³nica to offer its customers peak
mobile broadband speeds of up to 340Mbps ‘in ideal conditions’ and will also deliver more flexible use of its spectrum as well as boost network capacity.

Telefonica’s O2 in the UK will be the first operator in the UK to carry out LTE trials. T-Mobile, Vodafone and Orange are all expected to follow O2′s lead in the future.
Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, Huawei, NEC, Nokia Siemens Networks and ZTE are supporting Telefonica’s initial technology trials, though it is still open to working with other suppliers.

T-mobile along with Vectone intends to capture a large chunk of the increasing migration of international calling minutes on to the mobile.
Vectone is already established across Europe and has over one million customers across Denmark, Norway, Austria, The
Netherlands and
Switzerland.
T-mobile claims to have over 50% of the wholesale market already (virgin’s MVNO operation rides on t-mobile).
The Ethnic focussed, low-cost prepay service is estimated to target ten million potential
subscribers in the UK generating more than seven billion calls per year.
T-Mobile,
managing director Richard Moat said: ‘We are delighted to be supporting Vectone’s ambitious expansion plans for the UK market. The deal with Vectone signals our intent to become a major player in the ethnic MVNO arena.
‘With international calling card minutes rapidly migrating to mobile, this is an excellent time to be forging new partnerships in a segment which is showing signs of bucking the recession with strong projected growth rates.
‘Vectone builds on our eight existing MVNO partnerships and underlines our ambitions to target new growth areas in the wholesale market.’

base stations will announce 3G tarriffs on the day of launch.
Vinaphone officially launched in June 2006 and currently has over 13 million
subscribers. Vinaphone is among the top three

Motorola has earlier announced that it had won the 3G upgrade contract from Vinaphone.

Reliable sources have revealed that the Bharti-MTN merger’s fate was sealed three weeks before it was called off on SEP 30, 2009.
It is learnt that the South African governments treasury wrote to MTN on September 11 demanding that the merged entity be domiciled in South Africa (a request earlier made in mid August as well) AND that it should be listed in both countries, OR the deal would not be blessed (South African government’s pension fund, Public Investment Corp, holds 21% stake in MTN).
Members of the South African treasury had visited India on September 24 to understand the regulatory and legal framework of Indian laws and deliberate upon hurdles to the deal. The Indian side revelaed that the dual listing structure would result in huge tax losses for India among other factors.
The South African treasury insisted on a parallel listing via the trust route. Such parallel listing would mean creating two trusts, both listed, one in India and one in South Africa. Both trusts would mirror a share swap deal. Such parallel listing would have been compliant with existing Indian laws.
It turns out that the deal fell through because of South Africa’s political compulsions!
P.S: The investment banks involved in the deal – Bank of America, Merrill Lynch and Deutsche Bank from MTNs side and Standard Chartered & Barclays from Bharti’s side will not be making the potential 24 to 48 Million dollars had the deal gone through.
