U Mobile and Celcom Axiata have extended their agreement on domestic roaming for another three years.

Under the updated contract between the two companies U Mobile customers will continue operate over Celcom’s 2G network in those areas where the U Mobile 3G network is not present.

According to U Mobile chief executive officer, Dr Kaizad Heerjee, the seamless integration between U Mobile’s 3G network and Celcom’s 2G network would deliver an unparallel level of mobile communications to the end-users who constantly needed to stay connected. This move demonstrates the industry’s ability to arrive at a commercial agreement that helps meet the objective of the Ministry of Information Communication and Culture to benefit the consumers by providing nationwide coverage.

As part of the revised deal, at an undisclosed time later this year U Mobile subscribers will also be able to access data services, like mobile internet and multimedia messaging (MMS), over the Celcom network.

Alcatel-Lucent, a global telecommunications corporation has acquired OpenPlug, a software developer specializing in tools for mobile applications.  Through this acquisition, the company seeks to strengthen its presence in the mobile applications market by making their apps available for diverse Operating Systems and in more Service Provider Stores. The companies did not disclose the terms of the deal.

The acquisition of OnePlug will enable Alcatel-Lucent to intensify its role in the applications space by delivering, as part of its included group of developer tools, a platform where application developers can write an application once, which will then be translated to run on any of the five major mobile operating systems.

According to reports, this acquisition of OnePlug is going to strengthen Alatel-Lucent’s presence in the low cost mobile phone market. The acquisition will enable Alcatel-Lucent to extend OpenPlug’s functionality to service providers, enterprises and developers, who will now be able to create and deploy applications — in virtually record time and without sacrificing the unique customer experience — across multiple mobile devices and within service provider app stores.

Consequently, applications that had earlier only been available on more sophisticated devices such as smartphones, can now be enjoyed by consumers on any mobile device, which opens up opportunities in emerging markets, where low cost mobile phone usage is highest.

Samsung has launched its first tablet device ‘The Galaxy Tab’ with global carrier Vodafone and set to offer the product from October.

The market prices have not been released yet and much will obviously hinge on that, but Vodafone’s Samsung Galaxy Tab looks like a real contender for iPad in terms of functionality.

Unlike the Apple iPad, to which the Galaxy Tab bears an expected resemblance, Samsung’s unit possesses cellular connectivity from the beginning, to harmonize its Wi-Fi capabilities. It supports all cellular communication, offering voice and video calling, SMS and MMS plus email. It also support for Adobe’s Flash Player 10.1 which again makes it different from Apple. It has a 3 megapixel camera, can do more than 7 hours video between charges and has a phone function. The table can also be used to receive calls by using its in built speaker and mic.

The Galaxy Tab will run Android 2.2 and has a 7 inch display. And it’s a multi-purpose ‘media centre’ which sounds as if it’s slightly more portable and tuned up for mobility than the iPad.

The Tab is high-definition and can also be used as an e-reader or a navigation device. It features 32 GB of storage and weights 380gm.

According to JK Shin, president of Samsung’s mobile unit, talking about the nascent tablet market, Samsung identifies the marvelous growth potential in this newly created market. There is a new and emerging consumer demand that Samsung can satisfy since mobile is in the company’s DNA. This demand continues to grow and develop as users tap its limitless potential.

Vodafone was the first operator to announce a sharing deal for the device.

According to Patrick Chomet, Group Director of Terminals at Vodafone, Vodafone’s aim is to offer all customers new and attractive ways to enjoy mobile data, on the move, across a variety of devices. Adding tablets as part of our device range is a natural next step that gives customers an alternative way to enjoy great content and internet services.

Gopal Gujjar, 23, was found dead with burns to his left ear, neck and shoulders, near a farm in Bandha village close to the city of Kota of Rajasthan.

According to reports police believe that the young man was killed when his Nokia handset exploded whilst he was talking on it. There were no witnesses to the incident.

Police found pieces of the Nokia 1209 handset, a basic model released in August 2008, scattered nearby.

Earlier this year, a 27 year-old woman from Andhra Pradesh was killed while using a Chinese-made mobile while it was on charging.

Deaths caused by exploding mobile phones have been reported not only in India but in countries like China, Nepal and Ghana. One of China’s higher profile incidents occurred in 2007, when a mobile phone’s battery exploded in an iron plant worker’s shirt pocket, allegedly as a result of over-exposure to extreme summer heat. The explosion caused one of the man’s ribs to pierce his heart and was marked dead leading arrival at the hospital.

Considering the billions of Handsets constantly in use the probability of being involved in such an accident are very feeble for any individual. In fact analysts estimate that an individual stand more chance of suffering a natural disaster like lightning strike, earthquake etc. & man made like a stabbing, car/plane/train crash and nonetheless a terror attack or nuclear warfare.

If reports are to be believed, the big-brand global telcos are positioning themselves to be tough players in the cloud computing market as corporate attitudes to cloud warm.

According to researchers Ovum, AT&T, BT, Orange Business Services and Verizon Business could compete with established players from the IT industry in the cloud computing arena.

The telcos have a long heritage in providing managed end to end networks, data center services and hosting and have combined this with their networking and security expertise to meet the needs of customers for cloud computing services.

Some observers have considered the telcos might not fare so well in some parts of the cloud computing ecosystem, mostly in parts of the ecosystem requiring more application expertise. Telcos are well familiarized to organizing mission-critical data centers. That, in essence, is what modern switching and routing facilities are.

Telcos are bound to succeed here because they already have many of the key skills on tap the market.  They have a long heritage in the managed data centre and hosting businesses and when you put this together with their networking and security expertise it starts to look like a strong package.

The key for the telcos is the ability to offer end-to-end management of the network. This attracts mostly to large corporate and big companies with mission-critical applications.

Reimbursing a long-term path to offer improved service for Cloud connections along with standard Internet access was most probably one of the ideas in the back of the collective mind of Verizon when it stroked out its ‘joint statement’ with Google on Internet neutrality.

Certainly, the ability to offer something in between an enthusiastic but expensive end-to-end network, and a cost-effective but much cheaper Internet access offer would clearly be another big plus for carriers eyeing up the corporate cloud market and wanting – in the US at least – to make sure they didn’t run into regulatory problems through offering enhanced quality of service.
