The first African satellite will be launched in December 2007. The Sudan News Agency reports that the satellite, which will be launched on 18 December, was agreed at the ongoing Assembly of Parties of the Regional African Satellite Communications Organization (Rascom) meeting in Khartoum. The satellite will be financed and managed by African countries and launched in French Guyana. Director General of Rascom Jones A. Killimbe said that the launching of the first African satellite will pave the way for planning for the second satellite to boost telecommunication services in the continent. Killimbe urged member African states to pay their contributions to realise the agreed upon objectives. Sudan was elected Rascom chair of the presidential council for two years. The Rascom project focuses on rural telecommunications and linkage between the African states, aimed at boosting African development and integration.
