The Sri Lankan mobile unit of Hong Kong’s Hutchison Telecom International has passed one million users and is planning to double the size of its network over the next year, the company said. Hutchison Telecommunications Lanka launched GSM service in 2000 and has carved a niche in the island’s mobile market by offering exclusively pre-paid services, winning it an 11.4% share of the country’s subscribers by the end of June 2007, according to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database. It says it currently has a network of 12,000 outlets for customers to top up pre-paid cards.
