Italy’s communications ministry has announced a tender for 35 licences for WiMAX frequencies in the 3.4-3.6 GHz band. The starting price for a 15-year licence will be EUR 45 million. The tender will assign two licences in each of seven large regions, while another 21 licences will be assigned on a regional level and reserved for companies that do not have UMTS spectrum. Bids can be presented within 45 days of the publication of the tender in the Official Gazzette, planned for next week. The opening of the bids is expected around 20 January 2008.
