LG is planning to set up a KES 100 million mobile phone handset assembly plant in Kenya by 2009. According to the company’s statement, the plant will lead to a reduction in the price of mobile handsets by 15%. Byung Su Lee LG’s GM said that the plant will be selling phones locally and exporting to neighboring countries. “The feasibility study is at an advanced stage but we expect to start the assembly in the second quarter of next year. Consumers will get valued added handsets at affordable rates,” Lee further added. Even company intends to train and hire local personnel, creating 60-100 jobs. The move would help increase handset accessibility in the country, especially the rural areas, said Information Minister Samuel Poghisio.
