The South African ISP MWeb says it has successfully completed trials of WiMAX technology and it is now hoping to secure a full licence so that it can proceed with a commercial rollout. Using a trial WiMAX concession, MWeb has set up networks in several areas of Johannesburg and Cape Town, connecting around 1,000 customers. The firm says it has now approached the regulator, Icasa, to upgrade its trial permit to a full concession. It says it would hope to have a commercial WiMAX service up and running within six months of being granted an operating licence.
