Spanish telecoms operator Ono will launch a convergent telephony service for its customers the last week in November or the first in December, reports Cinco Dias. Speaking at a meeting with economic journalists, chairman Eugenio Galdon said the new handset would operate with a Wi-Fi router installed in an Ono base in a customer’s home and would use less battery than normal mobiles. Customers would be able to call via the modem while at home and on a mobile network when outside. Galdon said he expected mobile operators to fight the development of convergent telephony since it could hit their revenue to the tune of EUR 5 billion. Galdon said Ono studies had shown that 34 percent of customers’ mobile bills came from calls made at home, 22 percent from buildings like workplaces and 8 percent from public buildings.
