Sprint Nextel and Clearwire have confirmed that their planned WiMAX partnership has been abandoned. They mutually agreed to terminate the letter of intent signed in July, which envisaged linking their wireless networks and providing roaming to each other’s customers. According to a statement from the two partners, they “could not resolve complexities associated with the LOI and failed to reach final agreement on the terms of the transaction”. Sprint said it remains “fully committed” to rolling out a WiMAX network and will continue to consider ways of working together with Clearwire. Sprint said it’s on track for a soft launch of WiMAX services late this year in the Chicago and Baltimore/Washington markets and commercial launch in 2008. The company noted however that in light of the developments with Clearwire, it will review its WiMAX business plans and outlook and report back early next year.
