T-Mobile Deutschland has announced the completion of the first phase of its project to upgrade its mobile network. Swedish vendor Ericsson has modernised a total of 10,000 base transmitter stations (BTS) across the Federal Republic over the last two years, the cellco revealed in a statement. The upgraded BTSs feature EDGE technology, used by the Applie iPhone handset, which T-Mobile will be exclusively marketing in Germany from 9 November. It is also claimed the new transmitters will consume around a third less power and produce less carbon dioxide emissions. Though EDGE data rates are slower than 3.5G UMTS/HSDPA, the service is also a lot less demanding.
