Airtel slash call rates to $0.01 (Kenya)

Airtel Kenya has announced that it has reduced call rates to US$0.01 between 6am and 6pm. The new tariff, named ‘Feelanga Free Kilasiku’ is available to pre-paid subscribers.

According to Managing Director Rene Meza, they have witnessed a tremendous increase in subscribers and call volumes because of the drop in prices, something that has triggered a ripple effect in the market. This new tariff is in line with their strategy of offering affordable prices to their subscribers.

As per previous reports, Airtel Kenya had announced that it has added two million subscribers to its network since August 2010, effectively doubling its active subscriber base.

Starcomms’ subscriber base grows by 142%, reaches 1.55Mn (Nigeria)

Starcomms, Nigeria, posts consolidated revenue of $234.1 million for the period of January- September’08, seeing a rise of 84% since last year, driven by 142% growth in the company’s active subscriber base, which reached 1.55 million at the end of September 2008.
The operator has so far doubled its network expansion to 19 cities which will reach 31 cities, 20 states and 140 towns by the end of 2008.
EBITDA and net income both came in below expectations to $19.55 million and $17.85 million respectively, caused due to increases in handset subsidy costs and dealer commissions.
