Peru plans fourth wireless license auction in 2010
www.WirelessFederation.com/news: Peru has expressed its confidence of attracting a fourth mobile telephony operator this year. The auction is planned to be launched by ProInversin this year.
The previous attempt of the government to 25MHz of spectrum in the 1900MHz band failed to attract any bidders whose deadline was fixed on November 30, 2009. Due to the lack of financing as a consequence of the global economic crisis, Kuwaiti firm HITS Telecom and local telco Americatel declined to present economic offers and as a result of which ProInversion has extended the bidding process.
According to Proinversion, the process should be re-launched with more flexible conditions to enable the entry of a new mobile telephony operator
Entel reports 3% profit fall
Chilean telco Entel has reported a 3% decline in net profit to CLP33.45 billion (USD64.3 million) in the second quarter of 2007 compared to the same period of 2006, as a result of the absence of extraordinary non-operating profits of CLP9.9 billion accrued in June 2006 from the sale of Americatel USA and Central America. If the Americatel revenues had not been included in the 1H06 results, Entel’s sales would have increased by 36% in the second quarter of 2007. Second quarter revenues rose 1% to CLP210.9 billion, while EBIT climbed 6% to CLP44.86 billion. Mobile revenues, via its wireless arm Entel PCS, increased 17% to CLP158.87 billion in 2Q07 compared to CLP135.64 billion in the same period last year. The company’s subscriber base rose 15% to 5.29 million giving it a market share of 41%.
