Brazilian regulator approves Telecom Italia-Telefonica deal

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: The 2007 purchase of control in Telecom Italia SpA by a group led by Spain’s Telefonica SA has been approved by Brazilian antitrust regulator Cade.

The decision has long been anticipated and it depends upon continued observance of an undertaking to keep Telecom Italia’s local mobile telephone unit, TIM Participacoes SA, and Telefonica’s mobile unit, Vivo Participacoes SA, running independently.

The restriction on the deal was imposed in the year 2009 by Brazilian telecom-industry regulator Anatel.

Brazil’s mobile base increases by 0.67% in Feb

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: With an increase of 0.67 percent on the total number of mobile lines in January, the mobile phone base of Brazil reached 176.8 million in February. The latest data has been published by Brazil regulator Anatel.

Almost 1.2 million phones in the country were added in the month of February which has been the second best performance in the month after 2008. The month of February was ended by Vivo on a good note as its market share went up from 29.87 percent in January to 29.93 percent.

With a market share of 25.50 percent against 25.52 percent in January, Claro stood at the second spot. TIM Participacoes held third position with 23.65 percent market share, up from 23.63 percent in January, while Oi finished the month with 20.56 percent against 20.61 percent in January.
12.96 million mobile lines received 3G mobile services.

Brazilian regulator Anatel to auction H band in June

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: Brazil’s H Band for 3G mobile services will be auctioned off by the telecoms regulator Anatel in June 2010. Nextel Telecomunicacoes is one company which is already in contention for the spectrum. Around 44 concessions are expected to be auctioned with starting bids expected to be around BRL2.8 billion (USD1.5 billion).

20MHz, or 10MHz each in the 1945MHz-1955MHz and 2135MHz-2145MHz bands are comprised by the so- called Band H spectrum which will be assigned to new operators only. Two different MVNO models are also been considered by the operator one of which proposes to license large supermarket chains to offer MVNO products.

$1.14 billion to be invested by Telefonica S.A in Brazil

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: An investment of 2 billion Brazilian reals, or $1.14 billion will be made by Spain’s Telefonica S.A in its Brazilian unit Telecomunicacoes de Sao Paulo, or Telesp, in 2010. The focus of the investment will be broadband Internet, and more specifically on expanding the network.

According to the economist’s forecast, Brazilian economy will grow by at least 4% next year and this will surely raise the demand for Telefonica’s service. A sharp increase in Telesp’s investments in its Speedy broadband service was noticed after telecom watchdog Anatel suspended sales between June and August after the customer complained about quality.

According to Telesp CEO Antonio Carlos Valente, the investment budget will be about the same level as in 2009, when a capital expenditure target of BRL2.4 billion was set.

Anatel warns operators to prove their 3G capacity in Brazil

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: Brazil’s telecommunications regulator Anatel said that it will continue to veto the aggressive promotions of broadband Internet services of the operators. It warned the telco’s to prove that their networks can cope with the demand for mobile broadband services.

There has been an extensive expansion of broadband Internet services on mobiles with  20% increase in the clients taking the tally to 7.9 million in the month of October itself and is expected to reach 10 million by the end of the year.

The warning was issued amid this rapid expansion and in order to facilitate this growing demand, Anatel may also authorize network sharing between operators.

The local unit of Mexico’s America Movil SA and market leader in the Brazilian market, Vivo Participacoes and Claro along with other operators has decided to share infrastructure in order to face enormous investments in infrastructure in the coming years.

Brazil adds 1.29 million mobile phone users in July

Preliminary data published by Brazilian telecom regulator Anatel show that 1.29 million mobile phone users were added in July. This represents a 1.4 percent monthly growth to 93.05 million at the end of July from 91.76 million at the end of June. In the January-July period,
Brazil has added 6.84 million mobile phone customers, up 7.9 percent compared with the year-earlier period. In the last twelve months, operators signed up 16.47 million new customers, up 21.5 percent
