Samsung plans to launch tablet worldwide

Samsung Electronics plans to sell Galaxy Tab in the United States, Japan, South Korea and Italy this year, aiming at Apple in the new but already packed segment.

The tab will also compete with a lot of devices from Dell and HP. The analysis believes that Galaxy Tab is the most credible rival to Apple’s iPad. It is smaller than the iPad and Samsung has forged partnerships with the top four U.S. mobile carriers and with media companies which are providing programming for its Media Hub service.

The device runs on Google’s Android platform, has a 7-inch screen, smaller than the iPad’s 9.7-inch screen. The device is cheaper than iPad in most of the markets except Finland where it will be priced much higher than the iPad.

In Japan, NTT DoCoMo Inc will start selling the Galaxy S smartphone in late October, with Samsung.

Foreign mobile phone makers have struggled a lot to crack the uniquely developed Japanese market, and even Nokia has been forced to retreat from the market in the past.

But according to Barclays Capital analyst Tetsuro Tsusaka, they expect Samsung to fare well this time. Things are different nowadays. The kinds of products consumers want now are different from the products that existed when foreign makers were struggling to sell their phones here.

The Galaxy Tab will go on sale in Italy in October, in South Korea in October , November in the United States and Japan in November. Samsung aims to sell 1 million units this year.

Latest Mobile Internet Statistics

A recent study by Morgan Stanley has brought to light the  important online trends flowing in the global market currently along with predictions of the future of internet. The report has forecasted more online shopping by showing the geographical distribution of Internet users across the globe.

According to the study, web usage has witnessed a dramatic shift across the globe in the past few months. If Morgan Stanley’s analysts are to be believed, devices such as web-enabled tablets, iPhone, Kindle, GPS system, wireless home appliances have showed that the growth of the mobile web has been exponential.

The report has clearly stated that if the current rate of change adoption continues then mobile web will become bigger than desktop internet ever by 2015. The two trends which have been driving the growth of mobile web are the proliferation of better devices and the availability of better data coverage.

When it comes to coverage, global 3G penetration is expected to hit 21% this year. In Japan, 96% of mobile subscribers already have 3G coverage. Western Europe is witnessing a penetration of 54% followed by the US which is just slightly above 46%. However in the developing or economically depressed areas like Middle East, Africa, parts of Asia, Eastern Europe and South America, the growth is still in the single digit. According to the report, 3G is the key point in the success of the mobile web.

If talking of social networking, then it is highly apparent that the former’s use has already eclipsed email use across the globe. People started spending more time on sites like Facebook and Orkut and Twitter in 2007 itself, however it was only in 2009 that an increase in the number of users of social networks than the users of email was recorded. Today while Facebook scores the highest point with the most attention gained throughout the world, YouTube holds the second position.

Some of the interesting findings of the study are:

  • Just five countries including Brazil, China, India, Russia and the US account for over 48% of all Internet users across the globe.
  • Video accounts for 69% of mobile data traffic.
  • With the rise in the demand of Apple and Android platforms in the mobile OS market, Windows Mobile, RIM and Palm are loosing their shine.
  • Facebook is the single largest repository for user-generated content such as pics, video, links and comments.
  • Mobile retail is expected to be driven by real-time technology and location-based services.
  • On an average an iPhone user appends only 45% of his on-device time making voice calls.

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: A regional event to show software developers its first smartphone, the Nexus One in China has been scraped by Google.

An event introducing the sleek touchscreen phone to software developers in Hong Kong and Taiwan will be held next week, but Beijing will be excluded from the list. It is viewed as Google’s second move following the threatened pull-out from the China. Earlier, citing problems of censorship and a hacking attack, Google threatened to shut its Chinese Google.cn portal and pull back from China.

Shortly after that the launch of two mobile phones in China which use its Android platform were also delayed. Many staff at Google’s China operations is worried about their jobs due to the recent standoffs.

Samsung launches Bada mobile platform

Samsung hopes to extend its app store offering to a wider range of handsets, including less sophisticated feature phones and entry level smartphones.
The Korean technology giant said Bada — which means “ocean” — was a new addition to the company’s mobile ecosystem and would give users a “fun and diverse mobile experience”.
Samsung said it chose the name to “convey the limitless variety of potential applications” that can be created using the new platform, and to demonstrate the company’s commitment to “a variety of open platforms in the mobile industry”.
It also offers mobile operators an easy-to-integrate platform that can be used to provide “unique and differentiated services to their customers”, said Samsung.
By opening Samsung’s mobile platforms we will be able to provide rich mobile experiences on an increasing number of accessible smartphones,” said Dr Hosoo Lee, an executive vice president at Samsung. “Bada will be Samsung’s landmark, iconic new platform that brings an unprecedented opportunity for operators, developers and Samsung mobile phone users around the world.”
Samsung’s current smartphone range runs the open-source Symbian operating system and the Google-backed Android platform. Carolina Milanesi, a research director at Gartner, said Samsung’s decision to develop and use its own platform for entry-level smartphones was its attempt to “differentiate its products from the competition.”
But Geoff Blaber, an analyst with CCS Insight, questioned Samsung’s thinking: “The big question is, does the mobile phone world need yet another operating system?,” he said.

Samsung hopes to give users a ”fun and diverse mobile experience” on a wider range of handsets, including less sophisticated feature phones and entry level smartphones via its newly created mobile platform dubbed “Bada”. Bada means Ocean in Korean.

One can’t help but ask – Does the world need another mobile operating system?
