www.WirelessFederation.com/news: Wataniya, the Kuwaiti mobile operator, is eagerly looking for foriegn acquisitions and intends to expand its operation in North Africa.
“We already have two operations in North Africa, in Algeria and Tunisia, so North Africa is definitely a place that we want to be,” Scott Gegenheimer, Chief Executive Wataniya, reportedly said.
“If there are other opportunities available we will be definitely looking at that.”
According to a local media report Wataniya aims to acquire the Moroccan mobile operator.

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: Tunisia’s ministry of communications has selected a bid from France Telecom and Tunisian VSAT operator Divona for a 15-year fixed and mobile telecommunications licence. The Divona/Orange-France Telecom consortium, which was in competition with Turkcell and three local backers, presented the best technical offer, according to the ministry’s statement. The bid winner is anticipated to begin offering mobile services in January next year.

An official announcement will be made by the Tunisian government soon where in the financial details will be given out, said a spokeswoman at France Telecom.
The license involves installation of network infrastructure as well as providing 2G and 3G services.

It is reported that the licence base price did not justified a viable business proposition. As per BSNL, the base price for the licence was $ 10 million in Tunisia which has a mobile penetration rate of more than 80 %. It is planning to make investment outside India especially in the African markets, says report.

Alfa, the Lebanese mobile operator managed since Feb 1, 2009 by Orascom Telecom, leader mobile operator in the MENA region and South Asia, announced that since June 1, 2009, all its subscribers can keep themselves updated with the most current local and international news by getting breaking news headlines on their mobile for free. This service will be provided by Alfa in collaboration with Naharnet and AFP.

The first 90.000 subscribers to sign up to this service will be granted 1st month free of charge by simply replying by a SMS to the number 1018. They will be only charged the cost of the SMS which is 0.09$.

The subscribers will be able to choose their preferred language by texting the letter A for Arabic and E for English.To end their subscription to this service, users can text the letter C or the word “Cancel” to the number 1018. (more…)

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: France Telecom, the French mobile operator, has submitted a bid for the Tunisian fixed and mobile licence, reports the ministry of technology and communication. France Telecom is reported to have submitted a joint bid with Divona Telecom’s Tunisian subsidiary.
As reported earlier, Turkcell is also one of the bidders. The operator who grabs the licence will have to compete with Tunisie Telecom in the fixed line and internet sector and with Tunisie Telecom and Tunisiana in the mobile sector. The 15-year licence is due to be awarded at the end of June, with services expected to start in January 2010.
