Azerbaijan’s second largest mobile operator in terms of subscribers, Bakcell, has reportedly launched its 3G services in 62 cities under the brand ‘sur@’. The operator which received the 3G licence from the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) earlier this month reportedly plans to extend its 3G services to the country’s rural areas during the next year.

As per sources, the mobile broadband service provides users access to a maximum download speed of up to 14.4 Mbps across all coverage cities, with the speed reaching up to 28 Mbps in the capital, Baku. Further, reports reveal that Bakcell plans to launch Dual Carrier HSPA+ services over the network, which would raise the download speeds to 42Mbps.

Bakcell is the third operator in the country to offer its users 3G services. Mobile network operator Azerfon was the first to launch 3G in December 2009, followed by Azercell, subsidiary of TeliaSonera, which launched its 3G services last week.

Azerbaijan mobile operator Azerfon, which operates under the brands Nar Mobile and Azerfon-Vodafone, is reportedly planning to invest US$15 million in improving its infrastructure.According to Jurgen Peetz, CEO of Azerfon, the funds will be used to expand coverage of its wireless networks during 2011.

In 2009, UK-based telecoms group Vodafone signed a non-equity partnership deal with Azerfon to offer co-branded services. Co-branded products were first introduced in December 2009 with the launch of Azerfon’s 3G services and are marketed under the Azerfon-Vodafone banner.

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: 21,000 mobile subscribers will be provided with 3G network coverage by May due to deployment of third-generation base stations in the autonomous republic of Nakhchivan. The revelation came from Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Communication and Information Technologies (MCIT).

Broadband internet, mobile TV and video calling services will be promoted with the expansion of 3G infrastructure to towns and villages in the area.

The only 3G license in Azerbaijan was issued to Azerfon by MCIT to provide 3G services. Azerfon launched its 3G network in Baku, Sumgait, Ganja, Shirvan, Nakhchivan, Mingachevir, Tovuz and Shamkir, as well as in the Absheron Peninsula, shortly after receiving its concession in December 2009.

According to the general director of the company, Guido Helbich, the tests of the W-CDMA/HSPA network will be completed within 2 weeks after which the service will be made commercially available in the autonomous republic of Nakhchivan, Baku and Absheron. There are plans to extend the service in other regions too.

USD20 million has been invested so far by the telco in its 3 G network. Azerfon was awarded a 3 G license by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technologies, for AZN11, 000 (USD13,600), early this month.

The service will be launched soon on the 2.1 Ghz frequency and will be available not only in Baku or Absheron peninsula but across the country. 11,000 manat (US$13,681) will be charged to all those operators granted with the license.

According to the Mobile World database, the country has three GSM operators and one CDMA operator. 8.1 million subscribers representing 78 percent of the population were recorded by the end of Q3 2009

Azeri cellco Azerfon, which launched GSM/GPRS/EDGE services in March 2007 under the Nar Mobile banner, has signed new four new GPRS roaming agreements. Subscribers can now roam on the networks of Russian cellcos VimpelCom (Beeline) and MTS, T-Mobile of Hungary and Turkcell in Turkey, according to a press release. Nar Mobile had an estimated 320,000 subscribers by the end of September 2007.
