Ericsson and Vantrix partner for video optimization

Vantrix, the global leader of mobile video optimization and delivery solutions, today announced that it has been selected by Ericsson, the world’s leading provider of technology and services to telecom operators, to be their partner in video optimization. Under the terms of the agreement, Ericsson will be bundling Vantrix Bandwidth Optimizer with its Multiservice Proxy mobile broadband traffic optimization solution.

We predict that the number of global mobile broadband subscriptions will double during 2011 to 1 billion, and that video traffic will represent significant portion of the overall mobile data traffic”

We predict that the number of global mobile broadband subscriptions will double during 2011, to 1 billion, and that video traffic will represent significant portion of the overall mobile data traffic,” said Sanjay Kaul, Vice President, Consumer and Business Applications at Ericsson. The partnership will address our customers’ need to efficiently manage, optimize video content delivery over mobile networks, where the quality of experience becomes key.”

Vantrix Bandwidth Optimizer optimizes video and delivers it in real time while maintaining best-in-class Quality of Experience. Vantrix Bandwidth Optimizer provides up to 70 percent savings on network CAPEX and OPEX (RAN, backhaul and core) by dynamically monitoring network congestion and substantially reducing the size of videos.

Mobile video has become an integral part of daily life and it has transformed how consumers use their mobile phones. Over the last two years, as video has become more dominant in mobile networks, mobile subscribers have endured outages and reductions in speed, resulting in an unsatisfactory video experience,” said Allan Benchetrit, President & CEO of Vantrix. We are very proud to partner with Ericsson to provide the market with the most advanced and efficient mobile video technology. Our solution is the most advanced to control, optimize and manage the delivery of video in mobile networks, while actually improving the current viewing experience.”

2009- Year of IP/Ethernet Backhaul

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: The year 2009 can be declared as the Year of IP/Ethernet Backhaul. 21% increase in the spending on mobile backhaul equipment has been reported in 2009 reaching up to $7.2 billion worldwide. As operators try to reduce the costs associated with skyrocketing mobile data traffic, a wholesale shift in backhaul strategies has been recorded. Most of the operators around the world had been adopting dual/hybrid backhaul approach (TDM plus IP/Ethernet)

Within a month, most of the operators are planning to use a single IP/Ethernet backhaul, whether over microwave, fiber, or copper. IP/Ethernet is favored by the telcos to do the whole job, including the tricky timing and synchronization required for most of the world’s mobile networks.

Mobile backhaul microwave radio equipment segment is still lead by Ericsson with 20% worldwide revenue market share in 2009 while the Ethernet cell site equipment segment (routers and gateways) is lead by Tellabs.

AT&T to invest billions in network overhaul

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: Billions will be invested by AT&T this year for the overhauling of its 3G network. The iPhone-related mobile data traffic explosion has resulted in dropped calls and painfully slow throughput in some congested markets and this move is aimed at keeping up with this congestion.

$18 billion to $19 billion is the expected capital expenditures investment by AT&T in 2010 which is about $2 billion more than last year on wireless network and backhaul. iPhone zones like New York and San Francisco are the main targets of this overhaul and the operator will increase its capacity, with 2,000 additional cell sites and 400,000 more square miles of 3G coverage.

The move has become even more imperative for AT&T because of the introduction of Apple iPad which has increased the data traffic even further.

Leap Wireless Deploys Huawei’s 3G CDMA Platform

Huawei Technologies has signed a 3G agreement with Leap Wireless International for deployment of Huawei’s 3G CDMA platform by Leap. The agreement represents the commercial contract between Leap and Huawei. According to the agreement, Leap will deploy Huawei technology with its Cricket wireless services in Spokane, Wash., Boise, Idaho, and Reno, Nev.
The contract calls for a Huawei CDMA2000 network with 1xEV-DO Rev A capable BTS. The solutions will include Huawei’s SoftX3000-Softswitch, Air Bridge BSC6600, UMG8900-Universal Media Gateway, and High Capacity BTS 3606. This architecture brings to Leap the benefits of IP telephony in terms of quality of service, security, reliability, and cost-effective networking. The implementation of this distributed network will reduce the long-distance backhaul while simultaneously supporting 1xEV-DO Rev 0 and Rev A.

“We are honored that Huawei has earned an award in the United States from a key carrier such as Leap Wireless,” said Ken Hu, Chief Sales and Services Officer of Huawei. “We are excited at the long-term prospects associated with this partnership. Huawei will consistently provide innovative and customized products and services to create long-term value and potential growth for Leap.”
“We selected Huawei as a strategic partner based on their successful technical certification in our network, their outstanding product roadmap, and our common focus on quality and cost leadership,” said Glenn Umetsu, Executive Vice President and Chief Technical Officer of Leap.
