If reports are to be believed, a new regulation approved in Turkey could lead to a ban of BlackBerry smartphones, in a repeat of the disputes between RIM and a series of governments including India and the United Arab Emirates.
According to Miliyet and Vatan, Turkish producers of devices–such as Blackberry–that enable encrypted communication must give encryption codes to the Information and Communication Technologies Authority, or BTK will block the emailing service.
According to Vatan, BTK Chief Tayfun Acarer, Canadian company RIM should hand over the related codes to BTK as soon as possible. If Blackberry wants to do business in Turkey legally, they should give these codes to BTK as soon as possible… otherwise, BTK will implement the law.
BlackBerry devices use an encrypted e-mail system and are preferred by businesspeople due to the secure communication they offer. Other smartphones in the market don’t use such a system.
