www.WirelessFederation.com/news: Warid Telecom (Bangladesh) whose 70% stake was acquired by Indian telco Bharti Airtel will be renamed Airtel Bangla Ltd and will be operational under this name by the end of this month.

The acquisition has been approved by Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) while the investments plan has been submitted under which Bharti is set to pay off Warid’s debts of BDT2.3 billion (USD33 million) to local financial institutions along with massive network expansion under an initial BDT21 billion budget.

According to the BTRC, Warid telecom launched in May, 2007 signed up almost three million subscribers by end-December 2009.

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: Qtel, the Qatari mobile operator, reportedly said that it has interest in Portugal Telecom’s stake in Moroccan mobile operator, Mobitel. Bankers are working on financing to back bids for a potential 64.4% stake in Meditel.
Portugal Telecom owns 32.2% stake in Meditel is up for sale along with Spain’s Telefonica’s 32.2%. ‘Qatar Telecom confirms its interest in the process initiated by Portugal Telecom SGPS SA regarding the sale of their stake in Medi Telcom, Meditel,’ the firm said in a statement.
‘The intentions of the remaining shareholders in Meditel are still unclear, and, as such, Qtel will continue to monitor the situation until the facts becomes clearer,’ the statement said.

The combination of the Unanimis premium advertising network with Orange’s mobile and internet assets will enable advertisers, buyers and media agencies to reach over 71.5% of the UK online population and over 66% of the online population across the UK, France, Spain and Poland.
Unanimis will reportedly continue working under it’s brand name and will be a part of the Orange Group Advertising Network. The acquisition will boost Orange’s presence in two of Europe’s three main digital advertising markets – France and the UK.

The funding will be used for research on the enhanced version of LTE, LTE Advanced. In countries like Finland, Germany, Norway, Spain, Sweden and the UK LTE trials are going on. The commercial launch of services will be made in Sweden and Norway in H1′10. In September 2009, the EC will roll out negotiations on the details with project consortia, including the flagship Artist4G that builds on the achievements of the Winner projects and unites 4G industry and researchers from Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Sweden and the UK. The new projects are scheduled for launch in January 2010.

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: According to a recent survey by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation & Development (OECD), the mobile susbcribers in Netherlands enjoy the cheapest mobile tariffs across the world. The survey compared the cost for an average user (780 phone calls, 600 text messages and eight multi-media messages) in 30 countries in August’08 and found prices varied from $11 to $53.
Netherlands was followed by Finland and Sweden with lowest tariffs. The highest prices were paid in the US, Canada and Spain.

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: Spain has lost 54,141 mobile lines in the month of June, taking the total number to 51.68 million, up 4.2% since June’08, reports telecoms regulator, CMT. The drop in lines has been driven by  an adjustment of nearly 161,000 lines made by Orange in the prepaid segment. Over the last three months, MVNOs won 50.60% of the total new additions, Vodafone covered 28.70%, Yoigo accounted for 19.41% and Movistar for 7.18%, while Orange lost 5.89% in the period. Mobile penetration reached 112 lines per 100 inhabitants, versus 107.4 in June’08.
384,838 mobile phone numbers were ported in June, up by 19.3% versus the same period last year. Yoigo and the MVNOs saw a positive balance in portability, while Movistar, Vodafone and Orange registered a negative balance. Yoigo won 23,671 users and the MVNOs added 15,023 ported customers.
