www.WirelessFederation.com/news: The Issuer Default Rating (IDR) assigned to Sprint Nextel at ‘BB’ with a negative outlook has been affirmed by Fitch Ratings. Fitch’s action has affected an outstanding debt of approximately US$18.9 billion.

In the midst of an economically challenged environment, the ongoing challenges face in the stabilization of the postpaid segment of their wireless business has been encompassed in the Sprint Nextel’s ratings.

By improving the customer experience, strengthening the brand and promoting aggressively valued pricing plans, progress was demonstrated by Sprint Nextel during the second half of 2009. It also resulted in a material shift in its share of industry gross additions. However, lagging perceptions and exclusive handsets with other operators resulted in continued pressure on churns and at the end f 2009; only modest churn improvements were visible.

Fitch believes that if the CDMA business segment of the company stabilizes by the second half, Sprint Nextel will continue its progress with the reduction in the postpaid subscriber losses in 2010. However, Fitch also believes the iDEN segment will continue to lose postpaid subscribers in 2010, albeit at a lower rate, with subscriber losses in the range of at least 1 million to 1.5 million.

In the longer term, Sprint Nextel is required to leverage its scale across handsets and distribution of its prepaid business. At the same time it will continue executing on its strategic marketing initiatives to effectively address competitive responses pressurizing profitability.

By removing an anticipated $1.5 billion of annualized costs, Sprint Nextel is expected to vehemently control costs to offset further revenue pressures in 2010. The financial performance declined and leverage increased to 3.3 times (x) compared to 2.8x at the end of 2008 due to past operational pressure, which was within Fitch’s rating expectations.
