Lowell McAdam, Verizon President and COO, joins Verizon Board of Directors

Verizon Communications Inc. today announced the election of Lowell C. McAdam, Verizon president and chief operating officer, to the Verizon Board of Directors, effective immediately.

This is another important step in the succession process at Verizon,” said Ivan Seidenberg, Verizon chairman and CEO, who has previously announced that he will retire later this year. Following the board’s appointment of Lowell as president and COO last fall, we have been working to prepare Verizon’s leadership transition, and Lowell has provided outstanding leadership in running the day-to-day operations of the business.”

The addition of McAdam brings Verizon’s total board membership to 14.

As president and COO since Oct. 1, 2010, McAdam, 56, has been responsible for the operations of the company’s network-based businesses — Verizon Wireless and Verizon Telecom and Business — as well as Verizon Services Operations. He is also responsible for the technology management and CIO functions.

In addition, McAdam is chairman of the Verizon Wireless Board of Representatives.

McAdam held key executive positions at Verizon Wireless since its inception in 2000 and helped build the company into the industry’s leading wireless provider, with the nation’s largest, most reliable wireless voice and 3G broadband data network. He became president and CEO of Verizon Wireless in 2007, and before that served as the company’s executive vice president and chief operating officer.

He also served as PrimeCo’s chief operating officer, responsible for overseeing the build, deployment and successful launch of the new company’s customer service operations and all-digital network.

McAdam is a director of the National Academy Foundation, a partnership between business leaders and educators that assists high schools across the country.

Etisalat plans to invest $1.9bn on fiber optic links (UAE)

Etisalat, the Gulf’s largest telecoms firm, plans to invest US$1.91 billion on expanding its fiber optic network over the next three years. The company is bidding to make the UAE capital Abu Dhabi fully connected through fiber optic cable this year.

According to Ahmad Abdulkarim Julfar, Etisalat’s Chief Operating Officer, Etisalat has invested US$1.91 billion so far. They will invest a similar amount in the next three years.

Etisalat, whose $12bn bid for a controlling stake in Zain stalled this week after it missed a due diligence deadline, stated on Wednesday that it was still interested in the Kuwaiti firm.

 

MTS launches MBlaze in Gujarat

Aircel to launch 3G services in all 13 circles (India)

Aircel will launch 3G services before the start of World cup cricket in all 13 telecom circles where the company has won spectrum for its services.

Mr. Gurdeep Singh, Chief Operating officer, Aircel, stated that they expected  3G presence in all circles where they have bagged spectrum before this World cup begins (19th February).

Talking about broadband wireless access (BWA) services, Mr. Singh stated that the high speed internet services will be launched by the end of this year.

He added that they wished to launch 3G services first and see the response before launching BWA services which will be available by end of this year. By March, they would  be able to decide whether they would  go for LTE or WiMax for BWA.

LightSquared begins spectrum-clearing payments to Inmarsat (USA)

­USA based LTE start-up, LightSquared has reported the global satellite operator, Inmarsat that it is triggering “phase 2″ of a radio spectrum agreement between the two companies.

As per Phase 2 of the agreement Inmarsat will support a spectrum plan that increases the total capacity available through the LightSquared network.

In return Inmarsat will immediately begin to receive payments of US$115 million per annum, payable quarterly in advance – for a minimum of five years. In connection with the notice announced, Inmarsat has received a first partial quarterly payment of US$20.1 million.

According to Perry Melton, Inmarsat’s Chief Operating Officer, in preparation for the notice received today, Inmarsat has already initiated programs to ensure their customers are protected from interference risks and has conducted analysis of the issues over an extended period. Inmarsat is confident that the effects on customers will be minimal and, where needed, will be dealt with responsibly.

The notice for Phase 2 follows the notice given in August 2010 for Phase 1. Under Phase 1 Inmarsat and LightSquared agreed to a plan to enable the re-banding and efficient reuse of L-band radio spectrum covering North America. Phase 1, which is currently being implemented, is designed to increase the contiguous spectrum available to support the deployment of 4G ancillary terrestrial component (“ATC”) services and to protect the continued deployment and growth of MSS activities in North America.

Steve Jobs to take Medical Leave from Apple

Apple’s CEO Steve Jobs has announced in an email to his staff that he is to take medical leave from the company for an unspecified period of time.

In late 2008-2009 he took about six months away from the company for a liver transplant, which sparked a flurry of speculation about how the company would handle a CEO transition.

In an e-mail to employees he stated that he was taking the break to focus on his health. He would continue as Chief Executive of Apple and be involved in any major decisions, while the day-to-day running of the company will be passed to Apple’s chief operating officer, Tim Cook.

It is notable that the announcement was made today, which is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in the USA, and the stock markets are closed for the day. The market to the news will have had time to digest the news before trading resumes tomorrow morning.­

Twitter spreads out in Afghanistan with SMS Messaging

­Afghan mobile network, Roshan has announced that it is the first Afghan mobile operator to provide customers with direct access to Twitter through SMS through their mobile phones.

The introduction of Twitter service to Roshan’s customers is primarily targeted at the youth market, a demographic worldwide that is most heavily engaged with social networking and composes 60% of Afghanistan’s population.

According to Altaf Ladak, Chief Operating Officer, with the recent addition of Twitter service, Roshan continues not only as a leader in connecting Afghans with friends and loved ones, but also in expanding Afghanistan’s voice in the global social networking community. Afghanistan’s Ministry of Communications and Information Technology has found that half of Afghan Internet users utilize social networking sites. Now, they can do the same from the convenience of their mobile phone wherever they are.

MTN appoints Sifiso Dabengwa as CEO (Africa)

MTN, Africa’s largest mobile operator has appointed Sifiso Dabengwa as the new Chief Executive Officer and President of the company.

According to the company, Dabengwa, who will take over when Nhleko steps down on March 31, has been with MTN for 11 years and Chief Operating Officer since 2004.

Prior to joining MTN, Dabengwa was an Executive Director at state power utility Eskom. He has held senior management positions at MTN and managed the company’s two biggest units, Nigeria and South Africa.

MTN also stated that the position of Chief Operating Officer has been abolished and instead it will appoint a new chief executive of its international operations. Nhleko has accepted the board’s invitation to become a non-executive vice chairman and non-executive chairman of yet-to-be established MTN international operations board.
