The cost of contract smartphones may rise in the UK if a price war erupts between operators over the iPhone. Orange announced on September 28 and Vodafone on September 29 that they have successfully forged an alliance with Apple to launch the iPhone on their respective networks in the UK. T-mobile and 3 may be announcing something shortly too.
In an attempt to lure customers to the data-happy iPhone, mobiel operators will have to increase subsidies on the iPhone. Meanwhile, the cost of other handsets will have to rise as a result. Operators could shift subsidies from other vendors, such as RIM, HTC and Samsung, thus increasing their handset prices.
Orange will be selling the iPhone before Christmas, while Vodafone will only be able to launch it early 2010.
O2 has been bit hard by Apple’s decision to remove its exclusive rights on the iPhone after two years. It is thought the network may now look at alternative devices, such as the Palm Pre or Motorola’s android based range of phones to boost revenues.

TCI says Taliya still not able to roam

Telegeography writes…Iran’s largest cellular operator, state-owned TCI, says it will sign a roaming agreement with the country’s second national cellco Taliya only when the latter’s network has capacity for two million subscribers. TCI managing director Saber Feyzi told local news agency ILNA that the roaming will be set up under the terms of a contract which has been in place for some time. Feyzi added that Taliya is still free to sign a roaming deal with the only other national cellular operator, MTN Irancell. TCI had around 13 million subscribers and 95% of the Iranian mobile market at the end of 2006, according to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database. Taliya claimed an estimated 500,000 customers at the same date, while Irancell, which launched in October, had 154,000.

TCI hits 15m mobile subs

Telegeography writes…Iran’s largest cellular operator, Mobile Communications Company of Iran (MCI), a subsidiary of state-owned fixed line telco TCI, says it has reached the 15 million subscriber mark and mobile penetration now stands at around 21%. The country’s two other national GSM operators, Taliya and MTN Irancell, both claim around 450,000 customers. Local news portal Taliya News says TCI’s PR manager Davoud Zare’ian expects cellular penetration to reach 30% by the end of this year.

Iranian trio close to network deal

Telegeography writes…Iran’s three largest cellular operators – Mobile Communications Company of Iran (MCCI), Irancell and Taliya – are close to finalising negotiations aimed at clearing the way for the trio to share their network infrastructure. Taliya News reports that the cellcos have drawn up a contract under which they will share their base stations. The largest of the three, MCCI, currently has around 9,000 active base stations, 3,000 of which are in the capital Tehran. Irancell, which launched towards the end of last year, has said that local councils are resisting the construction of new base stations and this is hampering its expansion plans.
