The report claims that the cellco has started to deploy 3G base stations in the Punjab region, adding that the project has been outsourced to a third-party operator. The project will be completed in next two years.
www.WirelessFederation.com/news: AT&T, the USA based mobile operator, has reportedly announced that it is upgrading its 3G services in the 850MHz frequency band in certain markets across the country, boosting its network coverage and capacity. Mark Siegel, a spokesman for AT&T, said: ‘The 850MHz band is excellent spectrum because it propagates the signal much better. When we deploy it, people really notice significant improvements.’ The company has not identified which markets are involved in the upgrade at the time of writing.
www.WirelessFederation.com/news: Zain Malawi has reportedly raised the cost of its low cost ZTE and Huawei handsets which were at K1,499 to K3,499. Zain Sales and Distribution Director. Saulos Chilima said the subsidy was aimed at increasing rural penetration of mobile telecommunication at a budget of K840 million.
“The program has achieved its objective and we would now like to focus on other initiatives especially network expansion in a quest to offer quality service to our customers,” Chilima said adding that the subsidy had helped boost customer base to 0.5million.
He further said the operator will now focus on network upgradation in terms of capacity in order to reduce congestion.
“We need to install some software upgrades which could be mostly done at night or during weekends starting today as part of improving the capacity,” he said.
www.WirelessFederation.com/news: Ericsson has completed Vodafone network upgradation two months ahead of schedule. Ericsson announced that it replaced more than 10,500 GSM base stations in four of India’s ‘key zones’, including three large metro cities; Delhi, Mumbai and Calcutta.
Ericsson said that at its peak rate the project saw it replace one base station every minute. In total the vendor delivered in excess of 16,000 base station cabinets and more than 250 base station controllers.
www.WirelessFederation.com/news:Vistream, the German MVNO has selected the mobile equipment vendor ZTE for the upgradation of its GSM and UMTS network so that it can further resell its services.
Vistream which is known as an MVNO enabler, purchases in voice and data wholesale from network partner E-Plus but offers white label MVNO services using its own infrastructure.
ZTE said it will provide Vistream with network capacity for 500,000 subscribers, including an all-IP platform, ATCA (Advanced Telecommunications Computing Architecture) hardware infrastructure and advanced NGHLR (Next Generation Home Location Register) systems.
The project will also include geographic database disaster recovery features to help maximise the network’s reliability and lower the operator’s TCO (total cost of ownership).
Vistream said the upgradation was a part of enlarging its business across various European markets, “working in deep cooperation with various third party content providers.”

The HLR is a central database that contains details of each mobile phone subscriber that is authorised to use the mobile network. The contract was secured through Alcatel Shanghai Bell, the French company’s Chinese flagship company. By the end of this month, the upgraded network will be operational commercially. ‘Alcatel-Lucent’s industry-leading solution is enabling us to build a higher speed, more reliable and more secure network to satisfy the ever-increasing demands of our subscribers,’ said Gao Buwen, General Manager of Shanxi Mobile.

Many exiting sites across the country have also been upgraded. MTC Touch also upgraded its Intelligent Network platform to host up to a million pre-paid ‘magic’ customers, and implemented a core network expansion. The subscriber base has reached one million mark, holds a 57% market share, ahead of sole contender Alfa.

MTN’s Chief Technical Officer Francis Kazinduki said some of the investment will be channeled towards launch of regional switching centres in Tororo, Mbarara and Masindi. Presently, the arena caters five telecommunications service providers with each trying to improve efficiency and providing competitive tariffs.
