CTE Telecom rolls out first phase of WiMAX

BNamericas, quoting a company statement, reports that El Salvadoran fixed line operator CTE Telecom has installed its first seven WiMAX base stations as the company seeks ways to reach rural areas and counter service problems caused by cable theft. CTE, owned by Mexico’s Am©rica M³vil, expects to have installed up to 100 stations by the end of the year. CTE has been taking measures against cable robbery, which cost it USD3.5 million in 2006, and in May asked Congress to ban copper exports until 2011. The WiMAX rollout is part of USD83 million CAPEX for 2007 that Am©rica M³vil has designated for the region. Its mobile unit in El Salvador, Claro, is also in the process of expanding its geographic reach.
