www.WirelessFederation.com/news: A three year contract has been signed between Ericsson and Companhia de Telecomunicaces de Macau (CTM) to supply HSPA+ network upgrade. Network coverage and capacity will be expanded and the download speed will be reached up to 21Mbps by CTM in order to meet the rising demands.

According to Vandy Poon, CEO of CTM, in order to maintain CTM’s leading role in the competitive market, the company will devote substantial investments and resources, not only to provide customers with the fastest and most reliable 3G service in the market, but also to provide the best experience they can enjoy both at work and leisure.

Through this contract, end-to-end 3G solution will be provided by Ericsson as the supplier of CTM’s 3G core network. It will also deploy and deliver the mobile soft switch and radio access network as well as carrying out related network rollout services for CTM. Besides, the landline backhaul network connecting the 3G core and the base stations will be replaced by an IP fiber network with 1000Mbps connectivity capacity to each base station.

China Mobile launches Ophone

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: China Mobile has launched the open source mobile operating system to raise the number of mobile handsets which can operate on the China’s homegrown 3G technology (TD-SCDMA). The open source platform will bring down the barrier to develop mobile handsets operating on Time Division Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access technology, China Mobile Chairman Wang Jianzhou said in a statement. The company said it will launch a TD-SCDMA handset based on its open source mobile operating system this year.

Along with Palm, the operator is still in talks Research In Motion to offer BlackBerry.
China Telecom knows it needs good handsets to attract more 3G users, the representative said. Nokia also plans to launch a 3G handset with China Telecom this year, and Motorola may launch two, she said.
The Chinese operators are also planning to offer low-priced handsets to attract 3G subscribers. China Telecom and its distributors have ordered 4 million 3G phones from handset makers to sell in China, and most will be priced between 500 yuan ($73) and 1,000 yuan, the company representative said.

Ltd., a leading mobile phone provider, announced that sales of the Samsung Star, its hugely popular touch screen mobile phone, surpassed the 5-million mark this month. The Star (model number S5230), launched in May, is the fastest model in Samsung’s history to reach the milestone.

Launched first in Europe, one million of the touch screen devices were sold in the first month and a half alone, after which the company expanded sales efforts to include markets in CIS, Southeast and Southwest Asia, East-Central Africa, China, and Central America.

More than 700,000 units of the Star were sold in May and more than 900,000 in June. Monthly sales in July and August were 1.6 million and 1.8 million, respectively. Based on the current trend, Samsung projects total cumulative sales to reach 10 million globally by November. (more…)

China Mobile Chairman Wang Jianzhou, who is in Taiwan, will meet with HTC Chairwoman Cher Wang to discuss mobile phone procurement and cooperation in development and research of China’s TD-SCDMA standards, a HTC executive unveils.
The strategic alliance is likely to help HTC Corp.’s Ophone to compete with Apple’s iPhone in China’s vast market. China Mobile and HTC will develop at least one new type of mobile phone this year and at least five types next year. The two companies will develop new smartphones based on China Mobile’s Open Mobile System (OMS), the executive added.
