TeliaSonera, a leading telecommunications service provider, expects lower operator bills for users surfing the web through smartphones, tablets and laptops outside their home countries. As per reports, Lars Nyberg, President and CEO, TeliaSonera, has said that the industry has been shooting itself in the foot for years with the kind of prices they’ve had and that it has been a major mistake. He added that people turn off their roaming at the airport and don’t like to use their phones due to sky high prices.

Mr. Nyberg believes that lowering the data roaming prices would help improve the company’s overall profitability by encouraging more users to access data at affordable rates.  TeliaSonera had cut its data roaming prices by 90 percent this year for users travelling within the Nordic and Baltic countries and aims to extend this to almost 30 countries. As per reports, customers were able to access 20 megabytes of data at a charge of only $7.6 each day, significantly lower than the proposed ceiling of $1.24 per megabyte by the European Commission. Further, users are also sent a text message if they are required to top up their account.

While industry insiders feel that this move may negatively affect the company’s profits, Mr. Nyberg believes that this would infact better their earnings as compared to before.

Vodafone Czech Republic has signed a roaming deal with MobilKom for the CDMA network, which covers 75% of the population. Vodafone sells a ‘combo modem’ for laptops which automatically connects to the company’s W-CDMA network in areas with 3G coverage and in other areas searches for the CDMA network. Vodafone’s 3G network coverage currently stands at 30% of the population, with 95% covered by EDGE.

The world’s largest mobile communications operator, with a presence in 28 countries, 17 of which are European, and the MobilKom Austria group, present in four European countries, have agreed to an exclusive cooperation. The collaboration is based on the Partner Concept.

According to Boris Nemsic, CEO MobilKom Austria and COO Wireless Telekom Austria, the company is entering into a partnership agreement, which will allow it to integrate into a global partner network without giving up company’s independence. The two operators will immediately initiate a joint strategic product development program in certain business areas, which will add to the respective strengths. For the customers, this cooperation means that they are being offered the best of both the worlds. The cooperation does not entail an equity investment by either company; both partners will continue to operate as independent companies.

According to Heinz Sundt, CEO Telekom Austria AG, for the benefit of the shareholders, this cooperation ensures that MobilKom Austria will continue to provide an attractive contribution to the financial performance of the Telekom Austria Group.

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: Thailand’s mobile market leader Advanced Info Service (AIS) will have to wait for another four to six months before beginning the proposed data roaming service on the state enterprise’s 2100MHz 3G networks.

The decision has been taken by the board of Thai state-run telco TOT in order to give its contracted mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) some marketing leeway. AIS, operating as a small-scale 3G network using 900MHz frequency have been proposed to offer its users 3G data roaming on TOT’s 2100MHz network today for a trial period.

However, TOT has faced an outcry from the five MVNOs Loxley, Samart I-Mobile, 365 Communication, IEC International and M Consultant Corporation, who are committed to reselling services over the TOT 3G networks which launched in Bangkok in December 2009.

According to AIS chief executive Wichian Mektrakarn, Shin Corp-owned cellco had told TOT that it would cease the voice roaming service pending consultation with the National Telecoms Commission (NTC), in addition to suspending a pricing agreement with TOT under which the latter’s customers are charged THB0.60 (USD0.018) a minute for roaming instead of THB1.10.

Redknee has announced that MTC-Vodafone in Kuwait is using Redknee solutions to mange the rating and charging of roaming data services for its eeZee branded prepaid service. The new roaming service is exclusive to MTC-Vodafone prepaid customers.
Through its Unified Rating and Charging System (URCS), Redknee added capabilities to the MTC-Vodafone network to rate and charge eeZee prepaid subscribers for data roaming services. This includes General Packet Radio Service (GPRS), Short Messaging Service (SMS) and Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) while traveling in more than 20 countries internationally. Redknee enables differentiated charging of mobile data, allowing service and value-based pricing for data services – key capabilities to help operators increase uptake and usage of prepaid data services.
“Prepaid service coverage in the past was primarily limited to an operator’s home network,” said Lucas Skoczkowski, CEO of Redknee. “With the Redknee solution, operators are able to expand data services to support roaming. This enables operators to offer a prepaid service experience that is on par with postpaid, and increase average revenue per user (ARPU) through loyalty, mobile commerce and on-the-go purchase promotions.”
According to research from Informa, the Middle East and Gulf market expanded from 15 million subscribers in 2002 to 47 million subscribers at the end of 2005. Growth is forecasted to increase by 35 percent at the end of 2006 with penetration to expand by as much as 32 percent.
“Redknee works closely with operators in every region of the world,” added Skoczkowski. “Prepaid ARPU is rising and will also begin to tangibly contribute to an operator’s bottom line throughout other regions of the world within the next few years.”
