Nokia files another complaint against Apple with ITC (US)

Nokia has filed a further complaint with the United States International Trade Commission (ITC) claiming that Apple infringes additional Nokia patents in virtually all of its mobile phones, portable music players, tablets and computers.

The seven Nokia patents in the new complaint relate to the areas of multi-tasking operating systems, data synchronization, positioning, call quality and the use of Bluetooth accessories.

In addition to the two ITC complaints, Nokia has filed cases on the same patents and others in Delaware, US and has further cases proceeding in Mannheim, Dusseldorf and the Federal Patent Court in Germany, the UK High Court in London and the District Court of the Hague in the Netherlands, some of which will come to trial in the next few months.

AT&T to boost HSPA+ network coverage in Philadelphia

AT&T has announced network improvement plans designed to enable HSPA+ speeds and enhanced backhaul in Philadelphia and surrounding communities including in southern New Jersey and Delaware.

The mobile network will enhance plans that are part of AT&T’s planned US$ 19 billion investment in its mobile and wireline networks and other capital projects this year.

The project includes deploying enhanced backhaul connections to approximately 1000 mobile sites to enable HSPA+ speeds and add capacity to support more mobile traffic, installing more than a dozen mobile sites, adding spectrum carriers to roughly 900 mobile sites and deploying DAS networks at seven venues to enhance network coverage during events including one planned at Lincoln Financial Field.

Tiffany Baehman Named Vice President and General Manager of AT&T Mobility & Consumer Markets for Greater Philadelphia Region

AT&T announced that Tiffany Baehman has been named vice president and general manager of AT&T Mobility & Consumer Markets for the greater Philadelphia region. Baehman will oversee the sales and operations for more than 1,100 employees, 89 AT&T-owned retail locations and more than 475 national retail partners and authorized resellers spread across central and eastern Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey and Delaware. She will lead a market where AT&T has invested in a vast network infrastructure and contributed to local schools and community.

Baehman is a wireless industry veteran with more than 18 years of experience with roles in marketing, sales and operations. During her tenure with AT&T, Baehman has held various positions of increasing responsibility, including serving as executive director of marketing for AT&T’s Northeast Region. Most recently, Baehman served as executive director of sales in the New York market.

“The Mobility and Consumer Markets team in greater Philadelphia has a strong tradition of exceptional work, which is why Tiffany was a natural choice to lead this group,” said Steve Hodges, regional president, AT&T Northeast. “Her operational expertise and track record of delivering positive results for our organization make her an exciting addition to our leadership team.”

Nokia appeals for the dismissal of Apple’s suit

www.WirelessFederation.com/news: Delaware judge who has been overseeing the lawsuits between Apple and Nokia has been asked by the latter to toss Apple’s claims that Nokia is engaging in monopolistic behavior. It has been claimed by Apple that Nokia is demanding unreasonable royalties for wireless patents and it is in a breach of contract.

Nokia on the other hand has alleged that apple’s allegations are designed to divert attention away from free-riding off of Nokia’s intellectual property. Revisionist history, misleading characterizations, unsupported allegations and flawed and contradictory legal theories to turn these fruitless negotiations into a multi-count federal lawsuit are also some other allegations made by Nokia against Apple.

It has also been indicated by Nokia that financial terms regarding some of the patents in question were tried to be sorted out by the two companies but both of them were not able to reach any conclusion. Lawsuits have been filed by both the companies against each other and both of them also appealed to the U.S. International Trade Commission to block the import/export of one another’s handsets until the lawsuits are settled.

According to ITC, it will begin hearing evidence in October 2010, and it hopes to issue a final ruling by June 2011.

Sprint ‘Powers Up’ Wireless Coverage, Capacity to Its Nextel Network in Philadelphia, Delaware and Southern New Jersey

Sprint Nextel (NYSE:S) today announced enhancements to its Nextel Network in Philadelphia, Delaware and Southern New Jersey. These extensive upgrades are the result of additional wireless cell sites and equipment being added to the Nextel Network, delivering additional coverage and network capacity to serve its customers.
