TeliaSonera: TeliaSonera’s Mobile Portal Surfport Breaks One Million Record
STOCKHOLM, Sweden–(BUSINESS WIRE)–The number of unique users of TeliaSonera’s (NASDAQ:TLSN – News; STO:TLSN) (HEX:TLSIV) mobile Internet portal SurfPort exceeded one million per month this summer, signifying an increase of over 60 percent in one year. SurfPort is the leading mobile portal in the Nordic and Baltic countries.
SurfPort, TeliaSonera’s mobile Internet portal, has been developed to make it easier for TeliaSonera customers to surf the internet using the mobile phone and to access both useful and entertaining mobile services. During 2005 and 2006, SurfPort has been rolled out in Sweden, Finland, Norway, Denmark, Lithuania and Estonia. This summer the number of regular users per month exceeded one million. The number includes only SurfPort users. The total number of mobile Internet users among TeliaSonera customers is considerably higher.
Surfing the Internet on the mobile has become substantially easier, as the mobile network capacity has been increased. In addition, an increasing number of users have a mobile phone that supports mobile Internet surfing.
- It is great that so many people have discovered the benefits of SurfPort. One million regular visitors who use several of the services on the portal each month proves that SurfPort is well on its way to becoming a service for the mass market, says Henrik Nilsson, head of SurfPort at TeliaSonera AB.
The focus in the development of SurfPort has been on user friendliness. Customers and partners were involved early in the process and contribute constantly with thoughts and ideas about how to further improve the service.
- SurfPort can be described as a department store which you can visit wherever you are. We have an extensive service offering, which is important in view of TeliaSonera’s broad customer base. The most popular services vary from country to country, and the combination of both international and local content is an important success factor, says Henrik Nilsson.
In Sweden, the newspaper Aftonbladet is the most visited service on SurfPort, but TV, music and stock exchange information are also popular. In Estonia, where SurfPort was launched this summer, banking services are attractive

Helsinki shares close higher led by Nokia, energy stocks dip UPDATE
HELSINKI (AFX) – Helsinki shares closed higher led by Nokia and reversing earlier lows, while Neste Oil and Fortum ended lower amid ongoing concerns about the increased costs the utility is facing as it ups reliance on thermal power following shortfalls from other sources, dealers said.
At 6.30 pm, the OMX Helsinki 25 closed 0.42 pct firmer at 2,560.86 points and the OMX Helsinki was up 0.63 pct at 8,664.61 points, with volume at 1.120 bln eur.
The OMX Helsinki CAP portfolio ended 0.33 pct firmer at 4,731.35 points and the HEX Tech index was up 1.44 pct at 1,067.13 points.
Nokia closed up 1.69 pct to 15.02 eur, pulling back from earlier lows as investors continued to express mixed views about the recent newsflow surrounding the mobile phone market.
US brokerage Citigroup today lifted its earnings forecasts for Nokia as part of a telecom equipment review, saying the widespread pessimism in the sector is unjustified.
Nokia meanwhile has unveiled its new 6288 handset, a sliding model that can play video clips and which will sell for about 325 eur excluding VAT and subsidies. The phone starts shipping this month.
Fortum ended down 1.06 pct to 20.58.
FIM Securities said it is cutting its full-year earnings estimates for the group to account for what it estimates will be an extra 100 mln eur outlay in the second half to increase thermal output.
That is needed to compensate for reduced nuclear output following the shut-downs in Sweden and the dry Finnish summer, which has cut hydro capacity, FIM’s Olli Kahkonen said.
Kahkonen repeated his ‘reduce’ stance on the stock, with a target of 18-19 eur.
Neste Oil was off 2.73 pct to 22.47 eur.
Among telecoms, TeliaSonera was up 1.80 pct to 5.10 eur and Elisa was 1.99 pct higher at 16.90 eur.
In construction, YIT gained 1.58 pct to 17.39 eur after the group revealed that it has acquired two plots in St Petersburg with the rights to build blocks of flats there for 35 mln eur.
Industrials closed lower, with Metso down 0.38 pct to 28.52 eur.
Metso said its Paper unit has signed a contract to supply China’s Fujian Hengan with a second Advantage DCT 200 tissue production line for about 20 mln eur.
Wartsila B down 0.34 pct to 32.05 eur.
Wartsila said its BioPower unit is teaming up with the UK’s Helius Energy to identify possible sites for new power and heat plants, with Helius Energy conducting the market research, obtaining the relevant permits and arranging financing, and Wartsila designing and delivering the plants.
The two firms have already identified 13 projects they wish to take forward.
Outokumpu was 1.39 pct weaker at 19.13 eur and Rautaruukki K was 0.90 pct off at 22.05 eur
Kemira, which has strengthened its water treatment operations by buying four subsidiaries of Denmark’s Parcon, was up 0.79 pct to 14.11 eur.
Among paper shares, UPM-Kymmene was little changed — down 0.05 pct to 18.84 eur, Stora Enso R added 1.23 pct to 12.30 eur and M-Real B was 1.02 pct higher at 3.95 eur.
Of the leading banks Sampo A was down 0.13 at 15.90 eur.
Dealers said in the absence of stock-moving newsflow, Sampo is likely to hover around 15.95 eur, given that Goldman Sachs is thought to have put a sell order on 10 mln shares at that price.
Nordea added 1.94 pct to 10.50 eur and OKO A ended 0.25 pct firmer at 12.26 eur.

TeliaSonera to be first with UMA fixed/mobile convergence
Danish telco, TeliaSonera, will launch in November the first commercial service based on the global UMA standard enabling a cellular handset to be used to make VoIP calls over a home’s WiFi and broadband connection, and mobile calls outside.
According to an AFP report, TeliaSonera announced on Monday 28 August that it would launch in November a converged fixed mobile service under the name “Home Free” enabling callers to use a mobile phone at home as an IP phone.
The head of TeliaSonera in Denmark, Jesper Broekner, said in a statement: “We are introducing a product that combines the best of three worlds: mobile, fixed-line and Internet. Danish families will now be able to cancel their fixed line subscriptions at home without losing their home phone numbers, and at the same time save more than 20 percent on their phone bill.”
TeliaSonera said that, in future the technology could enable a cellphone to be used an IP phone if the user is in a Wi-Fi hotspot outdoors. The AFP report quoted TeliaSonera spokesman Rune Fick Hansen saying “We chose to concentrate first on usage at home…We may in a later phase extend this solution outside the home.”
Motorola announced in July that it had been selected by TeliaSonera to deploy its commercial UMA fixed mobile convergence solution for TeliaSonera’s planned UMA service launch in the second half of 2006.
Motorola said the contract “follows successful trials in 2005 and 2006 with TeliaSonera in Denmark and represents an important step forward in delivering Motorola’s vision of Seamless Mobility.”
Motorola will supply network infrastructure and integration and deployment services. Handsets for use with the service have not been announced. Motorola said that “TeliaSonera has trialled Motorola’s A910 device” but did not confirm that the A910 was part of the deal.
According to Motorola “UMA allows operators to use wireless LANs connected to fixed broadband connections as an alternative low-cost radio access network. With the technology users can seamlessly roam from cellular wide area radio access networks to wireless LAN to take advantage of better, higher speed, coverage and lower transport costs. Operators can therefore provide communications that are cost-effective in the home or at hot spots and the wide-area together with the convenience of a single handset with a single number, contacts book, voicemail and one bill. In addition, the delivery of wireless broadband to the mobile device when under WLAN coverage offers the potential to provide new data services for subscribers.
The Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA) standard has been developed by global cellular standards body 3GPP and is already being trialled by several operators around the world. Clearly, it has the potential to erode cellular revenues but given users’ existing preferences for cellular telephony and their close relationship with their cellphone (it’s their personal phone with their personal number and stores all their contact details) it seems more likely that UMA will enable cellular operators to own the customer and provide the full range of telephone services. (in Denmark TeliaSonera focuses primarily on mobile services, broadband services and cable TV and is the second largest telco in the country).
A recent survey by Motorola indicates that more than 50 percent of the mobile subscribers in Western Europe would likely sign up for an Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA1) service within the next 12 months, provided that mobile calls in the home were priced the same as fixed line calls.
Vodafone has already flagged its intention to expand from being an operator of cellular networks only. Earlier this year it set out a strategy to be a ‘total communications supplier’ by, initially, reselling DSL services and integrating PC, internet and mobile services to offer ‘seamless interoperability.
