Claro Implements Voucherless Recharge Solution by Orga Systems

El Salvador’s largest mobile operator, has recently implemented Orga Systems’ Virtual Voucher System. With this intelligent retail solution, Claro’s prepaid customers benefit from a unique and convenient top-up-solution while Claro benefits from increasing optimisation in their channel strategy.

Unlike scratch cards, the Virtual Voucher System also offers customers the ability to top-up with very small amounts.

Orga Systems’ Virtual Voucher solution is a cheaper, more convenient and more secure way of allowing prepaid subscribers to top-up their mobile credit that requires neither expensive point-of-sale (POS) equipment to be installed nor scratch cards.

Claro is using the solution to expand its distribution base into new rural territories for the first time as well as to target new customer segments with great success.

Customers can use cash to pay for top-ups, which is then securely delivered via USSD/SMS using the mobile handset as a POS device. An easy to use, web-based GUI provides comprehensive reporting functions, while the reload values are freely configurable, enabling Claro to offer customized top-up amounts for specific target groups.

With the barrier-free Virtual Voucher Solution we are finally able to reach the most remote rural areas in our country, allowing us to both target new customers and improve the service we offer current customers,” says Alberto Davison, General Manager, Claro El Salvador.

Ericsson provides Digicel’s Latin American EDGE

Telegeography writes…Swedish vendor Ericsson has been contracted by pan-Caribbean operator Digicel Group to provide nationwide GPRS/EDGE networks in El Salvador and Guatemala, with commercial deployment expected in the next three months. Digicel, based in Jamaica and backed by Irish capital, purchased the Salvadoran cellco Digicel (no relation) in October last year for an undisclosed sum, gaining a GSM network and an estimated 222,000 subscribers in El Salvador, plus an unused GSM licence in neighbouring Guatemala. Digicel’s planned network in El Salvador will be the country’s most advanced; currently only Telef³nica’s Movistar operates a GPRS network, which is not EDGE-ready. The technological competition in Guatemala may be stiffer; Millicom’s Comcel has operated a GPRS/EDGE network since August 2005 and has close to two million subscribers, and Telef³nica’s Movistar commercially launched a 3G CDMA2000 1xEV-DO network a month later.

Tigo to invest US$100mn in 2007

Honduran mobile operator Tigo, operated by Millicom International Cellular, plans to invest US$100mn this year in preparation for increased mobile demand in the country, local press reported.

The majority of the investment will go towards network expansion, and local reports have quoted Tigo president, Antonio Tavel Otero, as saying the company aims to have coverage in each of Honduras’ 298 municipalities by year-end.

Millicom’s Central American operations in Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador have been the key drivers of growth for the company in Latin America. Millicom also has operations in Bolivia, Paraguay and Colombia. In 3Q06, Millicom posted US$207mn in revenues compared to US$120mn in 3Q05.

According to the executive, Tigo accounts for around 1.5 million of Honduras’ 2 million mobile subscribers.

Digicel Passes 4 Million Subscriber Landmark

The pan-Caribbean operator, Digicel has announced its growth achievements in 2006. Achieving record growth in 2006, Digicel ended the year with a total investment in the Caribbean region exceeding US$1.5 billion, operations in 22 markets and more than 4 million customers, representing subscriber growth in excess of 100%.

In Haiti alone, where Digicel launched in May 2006, the company reached a milestone of one million customers after just eight months of operation.

“Digicel’s progress in 2006 reinforced our position as the largest GSM provider in the Caribbean region, with sustained growth in our existing markets and unrivaled growth through our entrance into new markets, such as Haiti, Trinidad & Tobago, Guyana and El Salvador,” said Colm Delves, Digicel Group CEO.

“2006 had several major achievements and milestones for Digicel” said Delves. “We look forward to 2007 and continuing our ambitious growth in key target markets.”

Digicel Haiti claims a million customers in eight months

Telegeography writes…Digicel Haiti, which launched in May last year and is part of the Digicel mobile group founded by Irish businessman Denis O’Brien, has announced that it ended 2006 with over a million GSM customers. Digicel says it has invested USD260 million in Haiti, which it claims is ‘the largest investment ever made in the country by an international company’. It has already raced ahead of its rivals, TDMA/GSM operator Comcel and CDMA provider Haitel, despite both companies responding to their new competitor by cutting prices and launching new networks. Comcel hurriedly rolled out a GSM network under the Voila brand in early 2006, whilst Haitel is aiming to sign up data users to its CDMA2000 1x services, launched in late August 2006 (source: TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database).

During 2006 Digicel Group launched services in additional Caribbean markets including Trinidad & Tobago, Turks & Caicos Islands and Bonaire, and acquired El Salvadorian mobile operator Digicel Holdings Ltd, U Mobile in Guyana, and Bouygues Telecom Caraibe, which extended its mobile footprint to Martinique, Guadeloupe and French Guiana. The group finished the year with over four million subscribers in 22 markets.
